Q: Please help me understand if we were all cursed to sin how will we ever please God? Do we have to die first to become a born again Christian?
A:
One of the most comforting and inspiring of Urantia Book teachings is from Jesus in Part IV of the book. In those teachings of Jesus, we learn that human beings are not cursed to sin. There is no curse on the human race because of Adam and Eve, nor are human beings inherently sinful. Jesus said: “Man is the son of God, not a child of the devil.”
Jesus also gave us new and enlightened definitions of evil, sin, and iniquity in this section of the book: He said:
“Do not make the mistake of confusing evil with the evil one, more correctly the iniquitous one. He whom you call the evil one is the son of self-love, the high administrator who knowingly went into deliberate rebellion against the rule of my Father and his loyal Sons. But I have already vanquished these sinful rebels. Make clear in your mind these different attitudes toward the Father and his universe. Never forget these laws of relation to the Father’s will:
“Evil is the unconscious or unintended transgression of the divine law, the Father’s will. Evil is likewise the measure of the imperfectness of obedience to the Father’s will.
“Sin is the conscious, knowing, and deliberate transgression of the divine law, the Father’s will. Sin is the measure of unwillingness to be divinely led and spiritually directed.
“Iniquity is the willful, determined, and persistent transgression of the divine law, the Father’s will. Iniquity is the measure of the continued rejection of the Father’s loving plan of personality survival and the Sons’ merciful ministry of salvation.”
So we see by this teaching that sin is not something that just happens to us. In the end, sinfulness is a personal decision – we are not born under a curse of sin. We can live a life free of sin by choosing to do good.
The way we please God is by choosing to seek and do his will in our daily lives; to accept our sonship with him and accept the fact that all other human beings are our brothers and sisters. We please God by choosing to love and serve him and to love and serve others.
God is a loving person and a loving Father. The Urantia Book gives us a beautiful revelation of the Father. I recommend you read it. Once we know more about God, we understand that God is not wrathful. God is not scary or to be feared, but loved as he loves us.
Once we know God better and discover how closely he dwells with us, we want to love him – not fear him. And this helps us to feel more comfortable with our heavenly Father and more willing to seek and do his holy will, which is always good. This helps us to live lives that are free; this is the spiritual liberty that Jesus promised us.

Being born-again has nothing to do with death of the body – it has more to do with a sincere decision to please God and live according to his holy will. In this way, the old self gives way to the new life of the spirit.

Since you have found us, I hope you will explore our website a little more. If you have an open mind, and truly wish to love a life free of sin and free of fear, I urge you to discover God in The Urantia Book. Discover the original and inspiring teachings of Jesus and discover the gospel of the kingdom of heaven: the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man.
One of my favorite passages in the book is this one: “Increasing happiness is always the experience of all those who are certain about God.”
Become more certain about God and his loving personality, and live as Jesus taught. He told us to “Fear not.” and to “Be of good cheer.”
