Q: I read about the pursuit of Truth, Goodness and Beauty in The Urantia Book. I can conceptualize the pursuit of Truth and Goodness, but what is the Pursuit of Beauty?

A: This is some of what The Urantia Book relates about beauty…regarding the arts:

its discernment is the discovery and integration of reality;

Art consists of harmony in unity;

beauty implies the presence of an appreciative mind and the recognition of the synthesis of diversity stemming from oneness;

beauty is always triumphant over ugliness.

To apply the above definitions to one’s life would constitute a pursuit of beauty; to disregard them would not. For example, some people think tattoos and piercings are beautiful, some splash paint on canvas and call it beautiful, some make noise and call it beautiful. The pursuit of harmony, unity, goodness and truth will produce a reality response that resonates with the source of true beauty.

And…regarding the highest kind of artistic expression:

56:10.3 Philosophy you somewhat grasp, and divinity you comprehend in worship, social service, and personal spiritual experience, but the pursuit of beauty—cosmology—you all too often limit to the study of man’s crude artistic endeavors. Beauty, art, is largely a matter of the unification of contrasts. Variety is essential to the concept of beauty. The supreme beauty, the height of finite art, is the drama of the unification of the vastness of the cosmic extremes of Creator and creature. Man finding God and God finding man—the creature becoming perfect as is the Creator—that is the supernal achievement of the supremely beautiful, the attainment of the apex of cosmic art.

Hence materialism, atheism, is the maximation of ugliness, the climax of the finite antithesis of the beautiful. Highest beauty consists in the panorama of the unification of the variations which have been born of pre-existent harmonious reality.

The subject of Beauty is scattered throughout The Urantia Book. HERE is our topical study on Beauty, which is a condensation of selected passages. And if you want to pursue it further, you will find many more instances by using our SEARCH feature.

I hope this reply helps; in any case, feel free to post any time.
