The Urantia Book identifies Jesus of Nazareth as Christ Michael of Nebadon. A Michael Son is something of a title; it is this title that Jesus held before he incarnated as a human being called Jesus of Nazareth. Here is a statement about Michael Sons from The Urantia Book:

5:3.6 The Creator or Sovereign Sons who preside over the destinies of the local universes stand in the place of both the Universal Father and the Eternal Son of Paradise. These Universe Sons receive, in the name of the Father, the adoration of worship and give ear to the pleas of their petitioning subjects throughout their respective creations. To the children of a local universe a Michael Son is, to all practical intents and purposes, God. He is the local universe personification of the Universal Father and the Eternal Son.

Jesus (Michael) is the head of all the hosts of heaven – all the angels and archangels, but he is not an angel himself. He is a Son of God – a Creator Son, a Michael Son – and all of the angels do his bidding.

According to The Urantia Book, there is no personality called “Archangel Michael,” but there is this passage that talks about an archangel OF Michael who attends dispensational resurrections, such as occurred following Jesus’ resurrection from the tomb.

37:3.6 Two senior archangels are always assigned as the personal aids of a Paradise Avonal on all planetary missions, whether involving judicial actions, magisterial missions, or bestowal incarnations. When this Paradise Son has finished the judgment of a realm and the dead are called to record (the so-called resurrection), it is literally true that the seraphic guardians of the slumbering personalities respond to “the voice of the archangel.” The roll call of a dispensation termination is promulgated by an attendant archangel. This is the archangel of the resurrection, sometimes referred to as the “archangel of Michael.”

Jesus and his true identity have been confused in Scriptural writings. One of the purposes of revelation such as The Urantia Book is to correct such confusion and set the records straight. For example, in the Bible, we read of Michael the archangel in Jude and in Revelations; nevertheless, this archangel was not Michael himself, but one of the archangels OF Michael.

I am speculating here, but it seems reasonable to think that by the time that the Scriptures were written down, most after the death of Jesus, it may have been known that Jesus was the Son of God, but Michael and the relationship of that name to Jesus was not understood.

It seems reasonable to think that the name of Michael may have been known by the writers of the Scriptures – possibly as a remnant of information from Jesus’ time here, and possibly even a remnant from as far back as the Lucifer rebellion, but there was likely a good deal of confusion as to what the name “Michael” might mean. Michael was mighty and powerful and and so he was thought to be an archangel. Again, this is just my own speculation.
