Hello,

In the booklet 140.6, we can read this :

You must start out afresh as little children and be willing to trust my teaching and believe in God. The new gospel of the kingdom cannot be made to conform to that which is. You have wrong ideas of the Son of Man and his mission on earth. But do not make the mistake of thinking that I have come to set aside the law and the prophets; I have not come to destroy but to fulfill, to enlarge and illuminate. I come not to transgress the law but rather to write these new commandments on the tablets of your hearts.



My question is the following : Do you observe a day of rest a week ? And if so, do you abstain from working on Saturdays or going to secular occupations or trading (buying - selling)?

I think that the set day for Sabbath is counterintuitive for every person. It would be different if we have universal religion on Urantia, where the entire town would congregate in a park or an arena or an grove, for the purposes of strict socialisation, worship, and peacefulness. Such policies mayen't apply to departments or profession, such as watchman or porter, where continuous maintenance 24/7 operation is required in a group trust within the profession.

But also, ever since George F. Johnson instituted the 40-hour work week, we have the alarming prospect that the "work week" (the income-producing phase) has been shortened down from 72 hours. So the realy question is what are we doing with these 32+ hours we have for our own free livelihoods. The 40 hour work week was supposed to be a testament to affluence and efficiency of Society, after the industrial revolution (1 November 1916). If a person has worked 40 hours to secure his means, what is the other time used for. This is to be known within the auspices of maturation goals in the consideration of the mindful human individual. Usually that extra time would be spent on personal crafts (home shop), socialisation, or home economics i.e. gardening helping children with financial goals...

The idea that rest shall be gained at the Sabbath, at the end of the sixth day, is in the modern, without this universal religion in Urantia Society, is what we called "benchmark", and you did not explain that the Tradition of Sabbath goes back to Adam and Eve - you say it is belong to Jesus because Jesus say that he nevertheless honours the word and truth of the prophets, even as a newborn child. It is because Adam and Eve worked a longer 6 days than the 72 hour workweek that Jesus condoned, perhaps exhausting themselves who knows how much sleep if any they got the first week probably less than 6 hours per day, when they were devotedly setting up their Administration. So it meant, maybe the Sabbath was an entire day devoted to rest.

I don't know how many people could claim such needfulness in the modern, certainly not I and certainly if people are not physically exhausting theirs minds and bodies in 6 days of the week, the meaning and impact of Sabbath would be lost.

Also, even though the length of the week was institutionalised, by this concept of seven days or whatever, do you not think that it is completely arbitrary, having no actual astrological or Urantian natural cycle to correspond with the custom? In the Urantia Papers, there is something of a sacred reverence for the number seven but it seems coincidental for humans to choose this as their custom.

I think that rather than reserving a day where you know markets would be closed or whatever, it is important for human beings to work with their whole heart mind and body, and to use up all of the cosmic energetic reserves that they have inside, and then seeing that this has been done, would be most appreciative and needful of real rest.

As pointed out in the topic on Divine Laws, we are not measured or judged based on what we do or do not do. God's true laws are about why we do and why we choose to do what we do and do not do.

Spiritual progress is likewise not determined by conformity with rules but by our motives, intentions, and priorities at the intersection of choice and decisions.

This is what the Master taught and what the UB teaches.

And this is the meaning of "to enlarge and illuminate" and "write these new commandments on the tablets of your hearts".

Read Paper 180, Section 1.

Can you enlarge and illuminate your focus away from and beyond the more primitive behavioral rules of conduct to the greater commandment of the law of love and motive? You are measured by why you choose what you do rather than by what you choose. Does that make sense to you?

See 170:2.23, 140:3.9, 140:6.4, 140:10.5-6

We should all seek and find time for family and for prayer and worship and for study and for recreation and for relaxation and rejuvenation. Our time on the mansion worlds is split about 50/50 for assignments and recreation when not in rest/slumber. We are told that on an advanced material evolutionary world we will "make a living" in 2 hours a day. The real question is how do choose to spend this opportunity of liesure time? What motivates the choices made? Love of God, family, and others ...or love of self and self indulgence?

Leisure time is a good thing...when motive and priorities make good choices for such time...whether one day a week or two...or more. And what of the hours after work the days you do work? What of that time? And what about your time at work? All times to demonstrate the fruits of the Spirit anf our love motivated life!

Jesus wrote new commandments on the tablets of the heart. He said for a faith-son all work is sacred. He never specified a time or place for it. As I understand it, a faith-son's work is done as a service, and because Jesus works with him or her, it is sacred and therefore timeless. References:

(2049.4) 192.2.13  Never forget that, when you are a faith son of God, all upright work of the realm is sacred. Nothing which a son of God does can be common. Do your work, therefore, from this time on, as for God. And when you are through on this world, I have other and better worlds where you shall likewise work for me. And in all of this work, on this world and on other worlds, I will work with you, and my spirit shall dwell within you.

(1959.3) 181:2.19 days. If, for the time being, your work in the outward affairs of the kingdom should be completed, you should go back to your former labors with the new enlightenment of the experience of sonship with God and with the exalted realization that, to him who is God-knowing, there is no such thing as common labor or secular toil. To you who have worked with me, all things have become sacred, and all earthly labor has become a service even to God the Father.

(273.10) 25:1.1 In the spiritual world there is no such thing as menial work; all service is sacred and exhilarating; neither do the higher orders of beings look down upon the lower orders of existence.

(1732:4) 155:6.11 Never forget there is only one adventure which is more satisfying and thrilling than the attempt to discover the will of the living God, and that is the supreme experience of honestly trying to do that divine will. And fail not to remember that the will of God can be done in any earthly occupation. Some callings are not holy and others secular. All things are sacred in the lives of those who are spirit led; that is, subordinated to truth, ennobled by love, dominated by mercy, and restrained by fairness— justice. The spirit which my Father and I shall send into the world is not only the Spirit of Truth but also the spirit of idealistic beauty.

Jesus set aside Wednesdays for their "off-day," even though they all observed the laws of the Sabbath, too.

Rest is important. Without it there is less energy available for relationships, prayer, worship.
I’ve had several 14 to 18 hour work days combined with 80+ hour work weeks and afterwards, all that is possible is rest.
It should not require much interpretation to figure out the real need for rest and be responsible enough to do it for maintenance of mind body and spirit.
Maybe writing it in stone was necessary for the ancients.

fanofVan yes Leisure Time: the discretionary phase of time that the human indivdual has gained above and beyond his means. It would be good, almost mandatory, for people who read the Urantia Book to ask themselves "what if I could use that time for doing God's Will?," seeing that for most people who earn their livelihood, the majority of time is devoted to the upkeep of their rents and appliances, the welfare of their family. Beyond this, looms the question "How do I concert my efforts towards the maximum end of Paradise for every human individual?" In a sense, beckons the human individual to exhaust the potentialities of life those which are bound to This Day, so that "one may earn one's rest", or slumber. Writing in stone with a chisel a much more physically demanding activity nosophist than as writing through a typewriter I certainly appreciate that sentiment. You can still do that, if you have propriety of the stone before you start to write.

There is even a story, in Jung's autobiography, when he made his tenure and acquired land on the shores of Geneva, where he encountered a deep "saudade", and the only cure was to build spires out of the old brick & mortar that he gleaned from his tours somehow. Jung had a deeply intellectual profession, yet he could not deny that his own cures, his own remedies would have to be forged through a deeper connection to either his own ancestors or the land and its ways. He is one of the romantics: even though studying at university achieving notoriety or accreditation for creating a new profession, he "went back" to an appreciation of masonry & carpentry, proclaiming that there is no real psychiatry without this type of mandatory physical labours. So he had enough money at that point in his career to do what he wanted or to publish pretty much any writing, but instead chose to return to the primitive professions. And in his memoirs that had proven to at least himself, the development of the greater appreciation of life or human values. If you can wake up each morning with a clear understanding of the work necessary, or at least with a willingness to apply the full set of your abilities, then no one will question your efforts and they will share in your success.

Is the Sabbath only about rest? Isn't the Hebrew commandment "Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy"? Certainly it is different from number 5 in this reference:

(1599.2) 142:3.10 When the children of Israel came out of Egypt in the days before the enlarged revelation of Yahweh, they had ten commandments which served as their law right up to the times when they were encamped before Sinai. And these ten commandments were:
(1599.3) 142:3.11 “1. You shall worship no other god, for the Lord is a jealous God.
(1599.4) 142:3.12 “2. You shall not make molten gods.
(1599.5) 142:3.13 “3. You shall not neglect to keep the feast of unleavened bread.
(1599.6) 142:3.14 “4. Of all the males of men or cattle, the first-born are mine, says the Lord.
(1599.7) 142:3.15 “5. Six days you may work, but on the seventh day you shall rest.
(1599.8 ) 142:3.16 “6. You shall not fail to observe the feast of the first fruits and the feast of the ingathering at the end of the year.
(1599.9) 142:3.17 “7. You shall not offer the blood of any sacrifice with leavened bread.
(1599.10) 142:3.18 “8. The sacrifice of the feast of the Passover shall not be left until morning.
(1599.11) 142:3.19 “9. The first of the first fruits of the ground you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God.
(1599.12) 142:3.20 “10. You shall not seethe a kid in its mother’s milk.

It seems as though the commandments and their meanings have evolved over time. At some point the Hebrews interpreted commandment number 5 to mean the Sabbath, a "holy day" dedicated to Yahweh, which some might believe is more than just resting.

Jesus also said this about the Sabbath - this was when the spies were trying to trip him up about the "rubbing of the grain":

And here describes the origin of the Sabbath custom:

(832.6) 74:4.6 And this was the origin of the Sabbath-day tradition. Always in Eden the seventh day was devoted to the noontide assembly at the temple; long it was the custom to devote this day to self-culture. The forenoon was devoted to physical improvement, the noontime to spiritual worship, the afternoon to mind culture, while the evening was spent in social rejoicing. This was never the law in Eden, but it was the custom as long as the Adamic administration held sway on earth.

The Sabbath was about self-culture: physical improvement, spiritual worship, mind culture and socializing.
