Lately I have been gaining more appreciation for the concept of assurance and its meaning and value in context of Religion In Human Experience (Paper 100), The Real Nature of Religion (P-101), The Foundations of Religious Faith (P-102), and The Reality of Religious Experience (P-103).

Be aware, anything I post that is not actual text quotes is merely my personal opinion based on my own understanding and is subject to error, lack of clarity, inadequate expression, etc. I am most hopeful for the opinions of others related to the teachings and anticipate expanding my own perceptions and perspective thereby!

Personal religious experience, when true, delivers an assurance of our being, our personal relationship with God, our safety and survival, our purpose, and our destiny. This experience begins in-mind with the ministry of the Holy Spirit by the Adjutants delivering faith assurance and with the subsequent ministry of the God Fragment/Thought Adjuster by personal revelation delivering truth assurance and with the additional ministry (on our world since Pentecost) of the Spirit of Truth by the confirmation of both faith assurance and truth assurance. In addition to personal revelation, we are advised that we are periodically blessed by epochal revelation (or revelation to the world and all people upon the world, the UB being the 5th such to our world)....the purpose of which is to add facts and truths to eliminate the errors and reduce the confusions of evolutionary religion and science and the limitations of personal revelation.

All of these sources and forms of ministry to mortals deliver "assurance" in some form or another. It is our personal assurance that spiritualizes and spiritizes us and changes our personal motives, intentions, priorities, decisions, perspective, and delivers a philosophy for living that delivers the fruit of the Spirit led life. It is assurance that allows us to learn to feast on uncertainty and to remain faithful and joyful and trusting in the face of chaos and calamity, and to embrace the adventure of that to come which we cannot predict nor control! Assurance is a most important concept for the UB student to understand and learn to embrace.

The mind poisons of doubt, anxiety, fear, anger, mistrust, and paranoia erode such assurance and prevent the fruits of the Spirit which come by the assurance of our safe keeping and safe passage in God's friendly universe!! That and those who are antagonistic to assurance - especially that assurance/faith/trust within others - are the enemies of truth, beauty, and goodness and embrace evil and spread evil to others....they offer the bitter fruit of the dead branch and the blind and deaf perspective of those who personally lack assurance...or, perhaps, they suffer from spiritual pride and feel superior in their assurance to others and believe it is their place to criticize, instruct, and otherwise demean the religious experience and growth and assurance of others. In either case, we should be wary of those who distrust God or God's power, purpose, plan, and process or who feel it their duty to tell others what to do and when and to measure others by their own self perceived superiority....puffed up tadpoles!

God loves us each and blesses us each with personality, mind, free will, and endows each with the ministry of the Spirits - and all of these combine to give us the assurance of God and God's love and our relationship to God and to one another.

Assurance is related to so many concepts and teaching in the Urantia Book. Here's a link to the keyword search results:

101:0.3
Religion, the conviction-faith of the personality, can always triumph over the superficially contradictory logic of despair born in the unbelieving material mind. There really is a true and genuine inner voice, that "true light which lights every man who comes into the world." And this spirit leading is distinct from the ethical prompting of human conscience. The feeling of religious assurance is more than an emotional feeling. The assurance of religion transcends the reason of the mind, even the logic of philosophy. Religion is faith, trust, and assurance.

101:1.6
Faith unites moral insight with conscientious discriminations of values, and the pre-existent evolutionary sense of duty completes the ancestry of true religion. The experience of religion eventually results in the certain consciousness of God and in the undoubted assurance of the survival of the believing personality.

101:2.4 (1106.3) There are two basic reasons for believing in a God who fosters human survival:

101:2.5 (1106.4) 1. Human experience, personal assurance, the somehow registered hope and trust initiated by the
indwelling Thought Adjuster.

101:2.6 (1106.5) 2. The revelation of truth, whether by direct personal ministry of the Spirit of Truth, by the world bestowal of divine Sons, or through the revelations of the written word.

101:2.14
Your deepest nature — the divine Adjuster — creates within you a hunger and thirst for righteousness, a certain craving for divine perfection. Religion is the faith act of the recognition of this inner urge to divine attainment; and thus is brought about that soul trust and assurance of which you become conscious as the way of salvation, the technique of the survival of personality and all those values which you have come to look upon as being true and good.

Me here: I think assurance is the bread and water of life - that which satisfies the hunger, thirst, and yearning delivered by the Adjutants and the Thought Adjuster. We yearn for such assurance. We need God. And God responds to our yearn, our hunger, and our thirst. And when we embrace God's response of assurance, then are we attaching our branch to the living vine to be nurtured by love and guided into truth...and this is The Real Nature of Religion...the experience of growth and personal progress in the Spirit. Religion is "the conviction faith of the personality"!

A very Jesusonian interpretation there, I suppose.

Well, what I applaud you for, in this conversation, is that you have already noted the association between assurance & revelation. I should qualify that I understand "revelation" to be personal experience which applies to the faith of the human individual. What experiences does one recieve, that provide this personal assurance to the human individual. Assurances are like man's understanding of virtues, in that there is a duty that follows the understanding. But in addition to virtues, assurances act on a personal psychological level to shape one's destiny. That is why they should not be taken of remonstrance: under threats, often false assurances & tricks, promises made in normal socialisation (taken under a different viewpoint of intellectual contract). But assurances can be provided, from a father to son, and the promises we keep.

That is why the promises we keep should live up to the level of spiritual assurance. These experiences are of a private nature, and they again lead us to the fulfillment of duty. We hope that seraphim, and cherub alike, do understand what is of personal assurance, and do guide us in profound means. The assurance is confirmed by Signs, "Say: "Praise be to God. He will show you His Signs and you will recognize them. Your Lord is not heedless of anything you do."" (Surat an-Naml: 93) Assurance comes when a person learns to recognise the providence that runs its course through ordinary affairs, and when to intervene in a situation so as to impede risks or dangers.

This is a pillar of theology, and a tenet of every major religious faith on Urantia. How does the person know in his heart, that God loves him so much that he is like a personal father to them. How does a person receive the faith, that would allow one to recognise the Signs? How does a person build the assurance that can only come from training, practice, and skill?

So you think that assurance comes from one's own efforts? By training, practice, and skill? I look forward to related text that might support such an assertion. I'm also curious regarding the role you think signs and wonders and human concepts of providence might have to do with assurance as described in the UB.

102:3.9 (1122.5) Knowledge yields pride in the fact of personality; wisdom is the consciousness of the meaning of personality; religion is the experience of cognizance of the value of personality; revelation is the assurance of personality survival.

Personal revelation IS the assurance of our survival. That assurance is something children and primitives enjoy and is not dependent upon our own intelligence, understanding, study, practice, or skill as I understand it.

I recall how certain was the teaching of Jesus related to the 5000 and the disappointing results signs and wonders and miracles and free bread and fish related to spiritization and growth and real change. I also recall his intentional refusal to seize the world's attention or obedience by such signs.

What is providence? The UB has much to say about that subject and serious warnings to consider.

118:10.5 (1304.7) God loves each creature as a child, and that love overshadows each creature throughout all time and eternity. Providence functions with regard to the total and deals with the function of any creature as such function is related to the total. Providential intervention with regard to any being is indicative of the importance of the function of that being as concerns the evolutionary growth of some total; such total may be the total race, the total nation, the total planet, or even a higher total. It is the importance of the function of the creature that occasions providential intervention, not the importance of the creature as a person.

118:10.6 (1305.1) Nevertheless, the Father as a person may at any time interpose a fatherly hand in the stream of cosmic events all in accordance with the will of God and in consonance with the wisdom of God and as motivated by the love of God.

118:10.7 (1305.2) But what man calls providence is all too often the product of his own imagination, the fortuitous juxtaposition of the circumstances of chance. There is, however, a real and emerging providence in the finite realm of universe existence, a true and actualizing correlation of the energies of space, the motions of time, the thoughts of intellect, the ideals of character, the desires of spiritual natures, and the purposive volitional acts of evolving personalities. The circumstances of the material realms find final finite integration in the interlocking presences of the Supreme and the Ultimate.

118:10.10 (1305.5) There is a providence in the evolving universes, and it can be discovered by creatures to just the extent that they have attained capacity to perceive the purpose of the evolving universes. Complete capacity to discern universe purposes equals the evolutionary completion of the creature and may otherwise be expressed as the attainment of the Supreme within the limits of the present state of the incomplete universes.

118:10.23 (1307.4) When men pray for providential intervention in the circumstances of life, many times the answer to their prayer is their own changed attitudes toward life. But providence is not whimsical, neither is it fantastic nor magical. It is the slow and sure emergence of the mighty sovereign of the finite universes, whose majestic presence the evolving creatures occasionally detect in their universe progressions. Providence is the sure and certain march of the galaxies of space and the personalities of time toward the goals of eternity, first in the Supreme, then in the Ultimate, and perhaps in the Absolute. And in infinity we believe there is the same providence, and this is the will, the actions, the purpose of the Paradise Trinity thus motivating the cosmic panorama of universes upon universes.

It appears that providence is rarely personal and only then if and when a particular person is critical to a totality function - like the reserve corps perhaps. We are also taught that our prayers for intervention are rather primitive and the prayer or "need" for planetary interventions are immature and impatient pleas for release from the certain repercussions of error filled choice. In other words, we must be cautious in our belief in, confidence in, and understanding of true providence.

The TA's and Adjutants and Spirit of Truth are instruments of personalized spiritualization and their efforts and that of the angels is educational for our personal growth. Assurance is something that is given to those who seek and listen and knock and pray and worship....not something derived by study, practice, and skill I do not think. Everyone benefits from the assurance of the Spirit, it is primal and essential and requires no belief or accuracy in beliefs to feel and benefit from. It is a natural nourishment that benefits the faith child in many ways. We gain assurance in quantity and quality based on our progress in the Spirit as we grow.

What do you mean by "the Signs"? The signs of assurance are the same as faith itself I think....the fruits of the Spirit are the only 'signs' of progress and growth....assurance is demonstrated by poise and confidence and joy despite chaos, uncertainty, suffering, material loss, and disappointment. Courage is the result of assurance.

We have to be careful about "signs" and "providence"....the UB uses both terms to illustrate much that is primitive and counterproductive in human thinking related to both concepts!

87:5.14 (963.9) It was not merely out of curiosity that the ancients sought to know the future; they wanted to dodge ill luck. Divination was simply an attempt to avoid trouble. During these times, dreams were regarded as prophetic, while everything out of the ordinary was considered an omen. And even today the civilized races are cursed with the belief in signs, tokens, and other superstitious remnants of the advancing ghost cult of old. Slow, very slow, is man to abandon those methods whereby he so gradually and painfully ascended the evolutionary scale of life.

I look forward to more of your comments....and related text.
