Madagascar marvel: Divers find fossils of extinct giant lemurs

http://edition.cnn.com/2015/03/19/afric ... index.html

"Around 5,000 years ago, the island of Madagascar would have resembled a Sci-Fi novel.

Strange, prickly forests, gorilla-sized lemurs, pygmy hippopotamuses, horned crocodile and elephant birds whose eggs were 180 times the size of what you'd find in your fridge today, all called the African island home -- that was until the humans arrived."

Common name Lucy
Species Australopithecus afarensis
Age 3.2 million years

Lucy skeleton reconstruction at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History
One of the most striking characteristics of the Lucy skeleton is a valgus knee,[17] which indicates that it, or "she", normally moved by walking upright.
Other findings[edit]
A study of the mandibile across a number of specimens of A. afarensis indicated that Lucy's jaw was rather unlike other hominins, having a more gorilla-like appearance.
Lucy was about 107 centimeters (3'6") tall.
