If you could explain The Urantia Book in a few words, what would you say?

Dear TruthBook Family,

How many times have you tried to give a simple explanation of what The Urantia Book teaches? If you were forced to say what the book is about in a few words, what would you tell people? Thanks to Word Cloud technology, there's no reason to guess. The Word Cloud is a technological tool that mathematically calculates and visually presents the prominence of the most used words in a document - even a whole book - at one glance. The end product is a visual "cloud" of printed words, arranged so that the word most commonly used is largest, and the others are arranged around it in their respective sizes. It is like a visual snapshot of the contents and "content" of the document.

Here's the Word Cloud of The Urantia Book:
Image
(Click here to see a larger version of the Word Cloud.)

In the Urantia Book Word Cloud, two words stand out loud and clear -"Jesus" and "God" - in that order. But if you add the word "Father" and "God" together as one concept, God the Father comes first and then Jesus. Said another way, they come as a complete package. In order to see God you need Jesus because Jesus was here to reveal God the Father to humankind.
Quote:
"Jesus is the spiritual lens in human likeness which makes visible to the material creature Him who is invisible." 169:4.13

Since there has been so much recent discussion about what is the primary focus of The Urantia Book , we decided to make our position clear, so you know just where we stand at TruthBook.

We believe The Urantia Book is a revelation from God and presented in four parts as one unified book. Each part is essential but given the evidence of the Word Cloud, it seems reasonable to assume that the teachings about God and Jesus, primarily found in Part 1 and Part 4, can be thought of as "book ends". The teachings about God and the life and teachings of Jesus are the eternal and infinite underpinnings of truth allowing you to trust and integrate the finite cosmological and scientific facts in the book.

Taken together, Parts 1 and 4 spiritually validate the book. Without either one, the revelation would be a mere shell of itself. Part 4 vividly illustrates the most flawless human life dedicated to God, essential in understanding the personality and nature of the Father. Jesus revealed God by being one of us. We simply can't know the Father without following the Son.
Quote:
"To 'follow Jesus' means to personally share his religious faith and to enter into the spirit of the Master's life of unselfish service for man. One of the most important things in human living is to find out what Jesus believed, to discover his ideals, and to strive for the achievement of his exalted life purpose. Of all human knowledge, that which is of greatest value is to know the religious life of Jesus and how he lived it." 196:1.3

"And now I declare to you that I, if I be lifted up on earth and in your lives, will draw all men to myself and into the fellowship of my Father." Jesus 174:5.13

As we strive to share the truths of The Urantia Book with an unbelieving world, we have before us the example of Jesus of Nazareth who did this very thing in his own life. He didn't have The Urantia Book, but he possessed all of the knowledge contained in it. He shared - and lived - divine truth as the Son of Man and also as a perfecting Son of God. And following his lead, we can "go and do likewise..."

Happy summer from your friends at TruthBook

Sincerely,

Your TruthBook Team

Technical Information about this Word Cloud:

The method we used to derive this Word Cloud was to find the top 100 most frequently used words in The Urantia Book. The reason for using the top 100 words is that the Word Cloud image cannot show thousands of words all at once. It would be illegible. Also, we are only interested in representing the main topics of The Urantia Book.

Hi Gremlin. Thanks for this fascinating sequence of overall word frequencies in The Urantia Book! :)

Would it be possible for you to compute two separate word clouds; one for parts 1 to 3, and one for part 4? I think the overall word frequency order might be very similar to the word frequency orders of both clouds separately, although God may be first and Jesus second in the word cloud of parts 1 - 3..

Hi Gremlin,

Does the software that you used to generate the word cloud contain any mechanism to account for semantic equivalencies (such as an inflector to identify pluralization)? This could be as simple as a manually defined word list. The reason why I ask is because it looks like there are semantically equivalent words contained within the cloud. I'd be interested in seeing these "duplicates" accounted for, thereby making room for other words in the top 100.

Obviously, it can get tricky. For instance, while I'm sure there is no disagreement that the word "personality" is semantically equivalent to "personalities" save the difference in plurality, I'd be hesitant to make the same association for a pair like "time" and "times."

Edit: On second thought, I think my "personality" example is actually pretty weak. Maybe "universe" and "universes" ?

The following word cloud of the entire Urantia Book represents quil's suggestion above regarding "semantic equivalencies". You will need to eyeball both to see if there are differences.

Hi Gremlin. I did some word-counting myself. :)

.....................Parts 1-3............Part 4..........Overall
..........God......2261...................1600.............3861
........Jesus....-..144...................4934.............5078

I really didn’t suspect Jesus was mentioned only 144 times in Parts 1-3! I’m still interested in separate word clouds for Parts 1-3 and Part 4 though, and/or separate word-clouds for all 4 parts, if possible..

My overall results differ (quantitatively) from your results. I’m not sure where this discrepancy comes from. I used the Truthbook search engine to obtain all quotes that contain the words God or Jesus. Then I used MS-Word to do the word-counts, thereby excluding compound words such as 'ungodly' and 'Gods'..

Hello Bart,

There's a lot of variability in counting words on a document the size of The Urantia Book. Also, the word clouds aren't science as much as they're representative art. I was going to reprocess the files that were used to generate the word clouds, to see if a more accurate representation could be given, but essentially the clouds will look the same although the numbers themselves may be somewhat different. So I'm content with the clouds as they currently exist -- we're using the section clouds on the site at
http://www.truthbook.com/index.cfm?linkID=1664
http://www.truthbook.com/index.cfm?linkID=1665
http://www.truthbook.com/index.cfm?linkID=1666
http://www.truthbook.com/index.cfm?linkID=1667

How do you count a word? Is Creator Son two words? Is love, Love, and LOVE the same... God and god? What about possessive pronouns, the capitalized words at the beginning of each paper, the capitalized word at the beginning of a sentence? Is the plural the same as the singular?

I'm using one single file that contains the frontmatter files, the Foreword, and 196 papers all in one text file. All the codes for italics and for punction have been removed. Apostrophies have been left, extraneous numbers have been removed. Statistics run against this give:
22,183 lines
1,108,966 words
7,111 digits
26,734 unique (vocabulary size -- of those, about 7,000 words are used only one time)
585,546 excluded

I can send you the text files if you'd like to do your own analysis.

Best wishes,
Larry

Or....you could just down the UF-ENG-001World-2009-0.19.SRT.txt.zip file from
http://www.urantia.org/urantia-book/download-text-urantia-book

Alternatively, I could give you the URL for that file. Here you go: https://s3.amazonaws.com/urantia/docs/en/UF-ENG-001World-2009-0.19.SRT.txt.zip
