An Ode to Yeast

Fri Feb 22, 2019 3:00 am +0000

I pulled you from a ball of dough that my father bought to shape into a pizza.
I put you in a bowl and fed you wheat and molasses and salt.
I covered the bowl and forgot about you.

When I returned, and uncovered the cloth,
I smelled what had transpired.

An entire epoch had cycled.
You ate the wheat, and even the bacteria from my hand,
Which I used to mix you into a batch.

So I fed you and covered the cloth,
And then I went to bed.

The next time two days,
And a layer of crust overshrowded your society.
I heard you say "You are our king and this is our universe!
Please Be Merciful"
And it was a new epoch.

The next day I ripped of your bud,
And I made my own pizza ball.
I heard your sadness, and I understood.
I understood not to send more of you
into the chambre to cook,
than I absolutely needed to digest.

Yeast, you are my first pet.
You are the first thing living that I was able to own independently.
And now I have a glimpse of what it means to be God to someone..
