fruits of the divine spirit

Wed Nov 02, 2016 9:40 pm +0000

193:2.2 - For the first time in the Book I read Jesus stating: "And the fruits of the divine spirit which are yielded in the lives of spiritborn and God-knowing mortals are: loving service, unselfish devotion, courageous loyalty, sincere fairness, enlightened honesty, undying hope, confiding trust, merciful ministry, unfailing goodness, forgiving tolerance, and enduring peace."
This reworking of the more mainstream "fruits of the spirits" is quite a deviation. Question: Why the sudden interjection of the term "divine spirit" and why the introduction of eleven new "fruits" (adjective+noun)?

Welcome, Curious! (I love your username, by the way).

I assume you are making a comparison to the Bible verses, which say:

You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit; but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits. (Matthew 7:16–20)

and also
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Of course, the Bible verbiage is a best attempt at remembering what was said, many years after the fact. In addition, the verse in Matthew is talking about how to recognize false prophets, so that is why it does not use the phrase "divine fruit", because it is referring to the fruits of those who seek to deceive.

The term "divine spirit" refers to the Thought Adjuster, which is a divine presence (as we learn in the Urantia Book). When one is aligned with their divine spirit, their fruits are "loving service, unselfish devotion, courageous loyalty, sincere fairness, enlightened honesty, undying hope, confiding trust, merciful ministry, unfailing goodness, forgiving tolerance, and enduring peace." These are simply other ways of expressing the same concepts, for example:
love - loving service
joy - undying hope
peace - enduring peace
forbearance - forgiving tolerance
kindness - loving service
goodness - unselfish devotion and unfailing goodness
faithfulness - courageous loyalty
gentleness - confiding trust and merciful ministry
self control - sincere fairness and enlightened honesty

Great answer Agon.

I'll just add that as The Master's life was a revelation to humanity and where he both amplified and expanded the worthy things that already existed in the religious culture of the Israelites, the URANTIA Book both amplifies and expands the worthy things that already exist in our religious, scientific, moral and cosmologic cultures here today.
