Melchizedek attempted to substitute wine and bread to replace animal sacrifice. Do you think if he, or Jesus, incarnated today they would advocate wine considering how alcohol abuse is so devastating to the family?

I think Melchezidek and Jesus are both aware of the fact that the wine and bread are symbolic and therefore, it makes no difference what is used. It could be air - just making actions of drinking and chewing - as long as those partaking in the ritual are doing so with focus on the spiritual meaning of the tradition. It's the state of mind and thought direction (upwards, spiritual) that matters, not the substance ingested.

That said, I also think Mel and Jesus would have faith and trust in the understanding of those participating that they can separate the difference between taking a tiny cup of wine in a ritual at church vs. self-medicating with over-indulgent drinking at home or in a bar.

Also....I doubt drunkenness is a modern problem either. The Old Testament (and New) have many warnings and prohibitions related to drunkenness.

Beer and wine are as old as fermentation. Distillation not far behind. Certainly long before Machiventa walked among us.

Many progressive steps in epochal evolution are inferior to the ideal to come but far superior to the prior practice. For example....is slavery desirable? Only compared to cannibalism!!!! Then it is far superior and highly desirable!! Is wine and bread superior to animal/blood sacrifice? Of course it is.

If, according to the question, either Son were to come today, then certainly would the symbols used be more modern than those used in the past....unless we still offered flesh and blood as sacraments today.

The epochal era determines the symbolisms used to elevate the teachings of Epochal Revelation. Jesus used many fishing, herder, and agricultural analogies and metaphors (seeds and soil and wheat and tares, etc.) which he probably would not use today.

 8)

Appreciate the replies. Almost all reader/believers do revert and gladly submit to the Last Supper ritual on Aug 21st every year, with and without alcohol. But we dive right into the worship sessions, without any preparation or custom, that take place at the beginnings and ends of the daily, weekly, and marathon ZOOM meetings of UB readers that have proliferated since Covid hit. Maybe this will expand to other faither groups over the decades and centuries.
