These middle Papers have remained central to my interest and study of the UB for decades now.  I have found them to be informative and inspiring, introducing profound concepts and explaining much of my personal religious experience and progressive growth.  The human being is created for the experience of spiritual transformation…the realization and expression of the spiritual nature with which we are naturally and inherently endowed.  The Spirit of God lives within us each and all providing us with all that is needed to realize our full potential and destiny of eternal adventure…the perfecting of our unique being over time in a vast and friendly universe as a beloved member of the cosmic family!

Beginning with our mortal birth on this world in time and space, we are ministered to in multiple ways to seek knowledge, understanding, experience….and God within.  We are driven to also formulate and articulate our personalized expression of that reality…the reality of being and becoming.  Growth and progress and transformation and transcendence; these comprise the mortal adventure.

Even as infants and toddlers in this life we are fed and nurtured by innate feelings of belonging and being cared for and importance and survival. Such feelings are not natural to the bio/electro/chemical being or life form….but they are inherent to our mind and its connections to Deity. We are most loved and suckled and cuddled and tended to caringly and affectionately by God.

We are given a yearning and hunger and thirst for love, truth, beauty, goodness, and happiness (or the Spirit) that we will seek out to have and to express the fruits of the choosing and having a personal experience of such spiritization of our minds and our lives. We have a hunger for God and only God can satisfy that hunger. This is the natural state of our very being from our very beginning!

If only the material side of mortal life supported such a truth and perspective of reality!! Some day it will. Even today sometimes it does. But far more often, the material side of life and our dual nature interferes with and becomes an obstacle to that full embrace of our spiritual nature and development. But whether conscious or unconscious, the mortal mind has a religious experience during this life. It may be limited to hopes and fears or ideas and ideals or moments of insight and inspiration or expressions of tenderness, love, service or random acts of kindness or the devotion of parent to child or the affections of partner and spouse. Or it may be an intense and focused search for God and the expression of the fruits of the Spirit in the finding of God within. Or something in between those spectrum points of the religious experience. For the religious experience is very personal and unique to each individual life in its progress and expression.

It is truly a relationship experience…our relationship with God.  God is the source of our hope and our yearning and our assurance and these are the foundations of personal religious faith.  And it is our growing faith that liberates us from the limitations and fetters of material life and propels us into the spirit adventure and attaches our branch to the vine and delivers the fruits of the Spirit to our life!  Faith transforms us and delivers our destiny to us!  Faith is soul food.  It nurtures and strengthens us and delivers courage and that sublime confidence in our source and destiny and helps us to feast and fatten on all uncertainties and challenges in the adventures of life!

Paper 102

The Foundations of Religious Faith

102:0.1 (1118.1) TO THE unbelieving materialist, man is simply an evolutionary accident. His hopes of survival are strung on a figment of mortal imagination; his fears, loves, longings, and beliefs are but the reaction of the incidental juxtaposition of certain lifeless atoms of matter. No display of energy nor expression of trust can carry him beyond the grave. The devotional labors and inspirational genius of the best of men are doomed to be extinguished by death, the long and lonely night of eternal oblivion and soul extinction. Nameless despair is man’s only reward for living and toiling under the temporal sun of mortal existence. Each day of life slowly and surely tightens the grasp of a pitiless doom which a hostile and relentless universe of matter has decreed shall be the crowning insult to everything in human desire which is beautiful, noble, lofty, and good.

102:0.2 (1118.2) But such is not man’s end and eternal destiny; such a vision is but the cry of despair uttered by some wandering soul who has become lost in spiritual darkness, and who bravely struggles on in the face of the mechanistic sophistries of a material philosophy, blinded by the confusion and distortion of a complex learning. And all this doom of darkness and all this destiny of despair are forever dispelled by one brave stretch of faith on the part of the most humble and unlearned of God’s children on earth.

102:0.3 (1118.3) This saving faith has its birth in the human heart when the moral consciousness of man realizes that human values may be translated in mortal experience from the material to the spiritual, from the human to the divine, from time to eternity.

1. Assurances of Faith

102:1.1 (1118.4) The work of the Thought Adjuster constitutes the explanation of the translation of man’s primitive and evolutionary sense of duty into that higher and more certain faith in the eternal realities of revelation. There must be perfection hunger in man’s heart to insure capacity for comprehending the faith paths to supreme attainment. If any man chooses to do the divine will, he shall know the way of truth. It is literally true, “Human things must be known in order to be loved, but divine things must be loved in order to be known.” But honest doubts and sincere questionings are not sin; such attitudes merely spell delay in the progressive journey toward perfection attainment. Childlike trust secures man’s entrance into the kingdom of heavenly ascent, but progress is wholly dependent on the vigorous exercise of the robust and confident faith of the full-grown man.

102:1.2 (1119.1) The reason of science is based on the observable facts of time; the faith of religion argues from the spirit program of eternity. What knowledge and reason cannot do for us, true wisdom admonishes us to allow faith to accomplish through religious insight and spiritual transformation.

I wonder how few of us are truly “unbelieving materialists” based on the teachings in Papers 100 & 101?  For those who can silence the ministers of truth within every normal mind of almost all children and fully embrace the lonely despair of accidental and random mechanism, only then does….”Each day of life slowly and surely tightens the grasp of a pitiless doom which a hostile and relentless universe of matter has decreed…”  Such an outcome is abnormal truly.  For we must be deprived of the natural order and the reality of the universe to learn to be so blind and lost and enveloped in doom.

Otherwise, we are all given the gift of faith and the assurance of faith in our personal safety and survival.  Do children and youth feel immortal?  Indeed.  Even though they see mortality of plant, animal, and human…death is not a secret if it is mysterious.  Children know the embrace of love…they must, as they so freely give love to others and share and giggle and laugh with others; and we know that love has but one source and cannot be held for oneself but only is felt truly in its giving to others…babies, infants, toddlers, and children know and share this Divine Love.  The circuitry of love is early established and is an auto reflex for us….until we ‘learn’ self importance and are denied love by others.

But what is normal?  I mean truly normal…in a family where love, loyalty, and duty rule that dynamic and relationship?  In such an environment, love is not taught or discovered….it is allowed to blossom and flourish instead.  It is given light and water and fertilized and it grows and grows naturally.  Love and faith must be unnaturally denied and destroyed to be forsaken.  The human being and mortal mind are designed for our spiritual circuitry and a personal response to those spiritual ‘impulses’ of ministry and energy and force of spiritization!

All of us, especially those in the earlier mortal epochs, must struggle…”… in the face of the mechanistic sophistries of a material philosophy, blinded by the confusion and distortion of a complex learning.”  We must also learn to cope with confusion, uncertainty, disappointment, and failure!  And yet, who has not witnessed the infant and toddler endlessly face and overcome these endless challenges?   Even when victory and achievement comes by the striving, still do we face new and more confusions, uncertainties, disappointments, and failures!!  Which child quits?!  Which child fails to stand, walk, run, jump, and embrace challenge?!  And confusion, uncertainty, disappointment, and defeat?!  No….we learn to quit.  It is not natural, it is unnatural.

And the victories we experience, despite the barriers to those….”…may be translated in mortal experience from the material to the spiritual, from the human to the divine, from time to eternity.”  The thrill of conquest and achievement is NOT material or learned and is a treasure that is pursued and aggregated and integrated and cherished… for gaining insight, truth, wisdom, and faith.  It is the reward of effort and the overcoming of barriers and obstacles.  It is learning, experiencing, achieving, growing, and it is ADVENTURE!  We are designed and born for such adventure!

Such a normal and natural beginning early leads to the realization and embrace of belonging and being and becoming and by such religious experience comes the birth of soul.  This experience is the very foundation of our religious faith!  We are born with trust and assurance ministry, the seed of faith and soul, which will sprout, branch, bloom, and bear fruit if not robbed of the soil, water, and food required to sustain it!  This cycle of transformation is far more natural than we might perceive.

103:2.3 The evolutionary soil in the mind of man in which the seed of revealed religion germinates is the moral nature that so early gives origin to a social consciousness. The first promptings of a child’s moral nature have not to do with sex, guilt, or personal pride, but rather with impulses of justice, fairness, and urges to kindness — helpful ministry to one’s fellows. And when such early moral awakenings are nurtured, there occurs a gradual development of the religious life which is comparatively free from conflicts, upheavals, and crises.

Me here:  Next comes the Adjuster!!

102:1.2 (1119.1) The reason of science is based on the observable facts of time; the faith of religion argues from the spirit program of eternity. What knowledge and reason cannot do for us, true wisdom admonishes us to allow faith to accomplish through religious insight and spiritual transformation.

102:1.3 (1119.2) Owing to the isolation of rebellion, the revelation of truth on Urantia has all too often been mixed up with the statements of partial and transient cosmologies. Truth remains unchanged from generation to generation, but the associated teachings about the physical world vary from day to day and from year to year. Eternal truth should not be slighted because it chances to be found in company with obsolete ideas regarding the material world. The more of science you know, the less sure you can be; the more of religion you have, the more certain you are.

102:1.4 (1119.3) The certainties of science proceed entirely from the intellect; the certitudes of religion spring from the very foundations of the entire personality. Science appeals to the understanding of the mind; religion appeals to the loyalty and devotion of the body, mind, and spirit, even to the whole personality.

102:1.5 (1119.4) God is so all real and absolute that no material sign of proof or no demonstration of so-called miracle may be offered in testimony of his reality. Always will we know him because we trust him, and our belief in him is wholly based on our personal participation in the divine manifestations of his infinite reality.

102:1.6 (1119.5) The indwelling Thought Adjuster unfailingly arouses in man’s soul a true and searching hunger for perfection together with a far-reaching curiosity which can be adequately satisfied only by communion with God, the divine source of that Adjuster. The hungry soul of man refuses to be satisfied with anything less than the personal realization of the living God. Whatever more God may be than a high and perfect moral personality, he cannot, in our hungry and finite concept, be anything less.

What then is wisdom?

Wisdom comes in many ways and in many forms:

4:3.4 God repents of nothing he has ever done, now does, or ever will do. He is all-wise as well as all-powerful. Man’s wisdom grows out of the trials and errors of human experience; God’s wisdom consists in the unqualified perfection of his infinite universe insight, and this divine foreknowledge effectively directs the creative free will.

8) But there are many forms of wisdom between human and God!  Ascenders gain experiential wisdom and Deity has existential wisdom.

Topic here on Experiential Wisdom:

Keyword search for "wisdom":

Again…a concept worthy of its own topic and discussion!  But as wisdom is so inherently linked to our religious experience (including by the ministry of the adjutants AND the TA) and the spiritualization of mind and transfer of our identity, it is an important element of our discussion here.

What is wisdom?  What are its elements?  Discernment, understanding, perspective, perception, experience, outcome probability reasoning regarding cause and effect….wisdom I think contains at least these elements.  Others?

102:1.2 (1119.1) The reason of science is based on the observable facts of time; the faith of religion argues from the spirit program of eternity. What knowledge and reason cannot do for us, true wisdom admonishes us to allow faith to accomplish through religious insight and spiritual transformation.

8) It is an expression of GREAT wisdom to have sufficient FAITH to overcome all doubts, fears, ignorance, confusion, uncertainty, and conflict with science, society, prejudice, etc. and to still act on that faith and the faith assurance given us by the Spirit within.  Mortals may have no greater wisdom I do not think.  It is that totally committed response to Spirit that grows soul and our relationship with God within.  The evidence of such faith and wisdom are the fruits of the Spirit.  Are we wise enough and faithful enough to show “love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.”

When confused or anxious, are we wise enough to go to the Lord in prayer and move forward with certainty in destiny?

149:5.4 (1674.6) “Seek not, then, for false peace and transient joy but rather for the assurance of faith and the sureties of divine sonship which yield composure, contentment, and supreme joy in the spirit.”

19:5.12 And from all this, you mortals, just now taking your first step on the eternal journey, can well see that you must advance a long way before you will progress by “sight” and “material” assurance. You will long use faith and be dependent on revelation if you hope to progress quickly and safely.

8) Again…I think we are taught that even human wisdom itself in our own limited sphere of being and becoming has multiple forms for consideration….but that the wisdom to embrace the Spirit is the key to our progress.  That embrace is a function of faith.  We will progress in our materially-moronitial  form to come by “sight and material assurance” – we will see and know and be surrounded by material delights and celestials and a reality of existence beyond our imaginations today.

We will have examples and guides and teachers and those ascending mortals and finaliters and Material Sons and Daughters and unimaginable Beings of glory and wonder and endless examples of Divinity….but not here and not yet.  Here, we must “use faith and be dependent on revelation if (we) hope to progress quickly and safely.”

In the first quote above, the Master teaches us about the result of faith is the assurance (confirmation?) of our faith which delivers an uncanny and unexplainable, even inexplicable “composure, contentment, and supreme joy in the spirit.”  This is the fruit of our religious faith.  This is the example of religious living given our universe by its Creator as a human walking upon our world as The Son of Man.

This form of wisdom is strengthened and enlarged by experience over time.  And yet, I do think there is another form of wisdom, experiential wisdom that is more than faith….the be as wise as a serpent teaching I think means to be deliberate and thoughtful and to act with fore-thought of outcome or cause and effect.  It means there is a methodology to understand when responding to evil, sin, and iniquity whereby we offer a positive response with an effect of softening, turning, or eradicating such error and iniquity – a ministry of positive act and not a passive or reactive response.  The second mile, the giving of one’s coat, the willingness to suffer abuse to protect another from it, the attempted ministry to another to soothe and redirect passions and fears.  This is another form of wisdom, an experiential wisdom that even the tadpole might achieve on this world and in this life.

But, I think, that wisdom form cannot be known or expressed without or prior to the first form….the wisdom of faith itself.  The composure of that wisdom must assuredly predate and preface and attend the latter form of wisdom or it will never materialize or find expression I do not think.

I believe that this second form of wisdom is also often spontaneous and even unconscious in its expression.  Like the artist is a conduit of inspirational expressionisms, the wise mortal is most often so “in the moment” I think.  I recall how the blind man became an articulate orator without the skills or experience or temperament to so express himself.

If we are wise enough in our faith assurance and we are composed enough in our joy, then might we become agents and agencies of the Divine Spirit and the voice of that Divinity within?  Might we express the spirit’s creativity and wisdom in the moment of need and opportunity?  Might we become the tool of God in the grip of personal humility in the moment?  That is, if we can indeed be humble in such a time and be self forgetting!!!

Such a mind must indeed be wise…to be faith assured, poised and confident, pure in heart, self forgetting, driven by compassion and hope to help another, humble in our faith, and open to God’s will in-the-moment, and confident in ultimate outcomes, and fearless in our own in-the-moment….in such a state of being….wisdom is expressed.  Is it our own?  I don’t think so, no.  It is indeed wisdom.  A higher wisdom than human wisdom.  But only available to, by, and through the faith-wisdom of the believers mind.  Such beings are only formed by the religious experience we study here together.

Thanks for attending…and especially to those who post and share their insights and inspirations !!

2. Religion and Reality

102:2.1 (1119.6) Observing minds and discriminating souls know religion when they find it in the lives of their fellows. Religion requires no definition; we all know its social, intellectual, moral, and spiritual fruits. And this all grows out of the fact that religion is the property of the human race; it is not a child of culture. True, one’s perception of religion is still human and therefore subject to the bondage of ignorance, the slavery of superstition, the deceptions of sophistication, and the delusions of false philosophy.

102:2.2 (1119.7) One of the characteristic peculiarities of genuine religious assurance is that, notwithstanding the absoluteness of its affirmations and the stanchness of its attitude, the spirit of its expression is so poised and tempered that it never conveys the slightest impression of self-assertion or egoistic exaltation. The wisdom of religious experience is something of a paradox in that it is both humanly original and Adjuster derivative. Religious force is not the product of the individual’s personal prerogatives but rather the outworking of that sublime partnership of man and the everlasting source of all wisdom. Thus do the words and acts of true and undefiled religion become compellingly authoritative for all enlightened mortals.

102:2.3 (1119.8) It is difficult to identify and analyze the factors of a religious experience, but it is not difficult to observe that such religious practitioners live and carry on as if already in the presence of the Eternal. Believers react to this temporal life as if immortality already were within their grasp. In the lives of such mortals there is a valid originality and a spontaneity of expression that forever segregate them from those of their fellows who have imbibed only the wisdom of the world. Religionists seem to live in effective emancipation from harrying haste and the painful stress of the vicissitudes inherent in the temporal currents of time; they exhibit a stabilization of personality and a tranquillity of character not explained by the laws of physiology, psychology, and sociology.

102:2.4 (1120.1) Time is an invariable element in the attainment of knowledge; religion makes its endowments immediately available, albeit there is the important factor of growth in grace, definite advancement in all phases of religious experience. Knowledge is an eternal quest; always are you learning, but never are you able to arrive at the full knowledge of absolute truth. In knowledge alone there can never be absolute certainty, only increasing probability of approximation; but the religious soul of spiritual illumination knows, and knows now. And yet this profound and positive certitude does not lead such a sound-minded religionist to take any less interest in the ups and downs of the progress of human wisdom, which is bound up on its material end with the developments of slow-moving science.

102:2.5 (1120.2) Even the discoveries of science are not truly real in the consciousness of human experience until they are unraveled and correlated, until their relevant facts actually become meaning through encircuitment in the thought streams of mind. Mortal man views even his physical environment from the mind level, from the perspective of its psychological registry. It is not, therefore, strange that man should place a highly unified interpretation upon the universe and then seek to identify this energy unity of his science with the spirit unity of his religious experience. Mind is unity; mortal consciousness lives on the mind level and perceives the universal realities through the eyes of the mind endowment. The mind perspective will not yield the existential unity of the source of reality, the First Source and Center, but it can and sometime will portray to man the experiential synthesis of energy, mind, and spirit in and as the Supreme Being. But mind can never succeed in this unification of the diversity of reality unless such mind is firmly aware of material things, intellectual meanings, and spiritual values; only in the harmony of the triunity of functional reality is there unity, and only in unity is there the personality satisfaction of the realization of cosmic constancy and consistency.

102:2.6 (1120.3) Unity is best found in human experience through philosophy. And while the body of philosophic thought must ever be founded on material facts, the soul and energy of true philosophic dynamics is mortal spiritual insight.

8) What an important knot of divergent threads woven together here….”the increasing probability of approximation” – “relevant facts actually become meaning” – “unraveled and correlated” –  “experiential synthesis” – “unification of the diversity of reality” – “harmony of the triunity of functional reality”.

This appears to be where the rubber is meeting the road!  There is the roadway for travel and the tire which interfaces the roadway with the spinning axle which is driven by the internal engine with plenty of differential drivers along the transfer of power from the cylinder to the roadway for the progressive propulsion of the vehicle known as “me”!!

Lots of moving parts in this machinery of self…not a mechanism, no….but a system of interrelated and interdependent functionalities that is uniquely and highly personalized in its actual ‘performance’ as an experience of progress…requiring significant and continuous tinkering and tuning to improve performance….but in potential, every person has the ingredients to be high performance road warrior and powerful form of conveyance – a customized hot rod of incredible coordination and output!

A weak analogy but helpful to me in seeing the many moving parts that seek unification and harmonization and coordination and the potential that resides in this humble beginning I know as “me”.   This will take time……

102:2.6 (1120.3) Unity is best found in human experience through philosophy. And while the body of philosophic thought must ever be founded on material facts, the soul and energy of true philosophic dynamics is mortal spiritual insight.

102:2.7 (1120.4) Evolutionary man does not naturally relish hard work. To keep pace in his life experience with the impelling demands and the compelling urges of a growing religious experience means incessant activity in spiritual growth, intellectual expansion, factual enlargement, and social service. There is no real religion apart from a highly active personality. Therefore do the more indolent of men often seek to escape the rigors of truly religious activities by a species of ingenious self-deception through resorting to a retreat to the false shelter of stereotyped religious doctrines and dogmas. But true religion is alive. Intellectual crystallization of religious concepts is the equivalent of spiritual death. You cannot conceive of religion without ideas, but when religion once becomes reduced only to an idea, it is no longer religion; it has become merely a species of human philosophy.

102:2.8 (1121.1) Again, there are other types of unstable and poorly disciplined souls who would use the sentimental ideas of religion as an avenue of escape from the irritating demands of living. When certain vacillating and timid mortals attempt to escape from the incessant pressure of evolutionary life, religion, as they conceive it, seems to present the nearest refuge, the best avenue of escape. But it is the mission of religion to prepare man for bravely, even heroically, facing the vicissitudes of life. Religion is evolutionary man’s supreme endowment, the one thing which enables him to carry on and “endure as seeing Him who is invisible.” Mysticism, however, is often something of a retreat from life which is embraced by those humans who do not relish the more robust activities of living a religious life in the open arenas of human society and commerce. True religion must act. Conduct will be the result of religion when man actually has it, or rather when religion is permitted truly to possess the man. Never will religion be content with mere thinking or unacting feeling.

102:2.9 (1121.2) We are not blind to the fact that religion often acts unwisely, even irreligiously, but it acts. Aberrations of religious conviction have led to bloody persecutions, but always and ever religion does something; it is dynamic!

8) In the history of the development of social/evolutionary religion, we are provided many examples of the dynamic nature of religion and religious thinking and living.  On few worlds does society/civilization have to blindly grope its own way forward into such progression.  On most worlds, there are multiple capitals and centers of celestial knowledge, example, schools, technology development, commerce, ethics, morality, city building, negotiation, arbitration, peace making, and truth, beauty, and goodness.  Certainly it takes millennia for an entire world to become so socialized….still, quicker perhaps on more normal worlds?  And with less error and vestiges of primitivism perhaps?  Maybe.

But I sometimes wonder.  Have the agents and ministers of religion and personal spirit endowment somehow managed here on Urantia to nurture and evolve civilization in ways which have compensated for earlier losses and missteps?  Personally, I find it rather incredible that our world has progressed so far without the normal patterns of example and leadership and development.  The reason for that I believe is the topic we discuss here…the inherent nature of religion and the faith experience delivered within mind that does not rely exclusively or depend necessarily upon external examples or sources of knowledge!!

I think that the “I AM” and “I AM LOVED” and “I AM SAFE” experience which delivers the personal religious experience and insights and faith and faith assurance are sufficient to transform a world, generation after generation, especially once the Son’s Spirit and the flood of TA’s is unleashed upon a world!

But even before then and that, the Adjutants and Holy Spirit move a world forward into a progressive realization of potential – suggested reading is Papers 85-92 – remember that only as goes the parts so goes the whole – even with a successful Prince and Garden, etc.  And the Mortal Epochs take tens and hundreds of thousands of years even with those examples and leadership.  The Most Highs appear to have their Plan B’s well in hand….indeed, one might surmise that our world proves how well things can progress despite the failures defaults, and even iniquitous rebellion of our on-planet lradership – a built-in failsafe as it were.

(956.1) 86:6.5 Each passing generation smiles at the foolish superstitions of its ancestors while it goes on entertaining those fallacies of thought and worship which will give cause for further smiling on the part of enlightened posterity.

(956.2) 86:6.6 But at last the mind of primitive man was occupied with thoughts which transcended all of his inherent biologic urges; at last man was about to evolve an art of living based on something more than response to material stimuli. The beginnings of a primitive philosophic life policy were emerging. A supernatural standard of living was about to appear, for, if the spirit ghost in anger visits ill luck and in pleasure good fortune, then must human conduct be regulated accordingly. The concept of right and wrong had at last evolved; and all of this long before the times of any revelation on earth.

(956.3) 86:6.7 With the emergence of these concepts, there was initiated the long and wasteful struggle to appease the ever-displeased spirits, the slavish bondage to evolutionary religious fear, that long waste of human effort upon tombs, temples, sacrifices, and priesthoods. It was a terrible and frightful price to pay, but it was worth all it cost, for man therein achieved a natural consciousness of relative right and wrong; human ethics was born!

7. The Function of Primitive Religion

(956.4) 86:7.1 The savage felt the need of insurance, and he therefore willingly paid his burdensome premiums of fear, superstition, dread, and priest gifts toward his policy of magic insurance against ill luck. Primitive religion was simply the payment of premiums on insurance against the perils of the forests; civilized man pays material premiums against the accidents of industry and the exigencies of modern modes of living.

(956.5) 86:7.2 Modern society is removing the business of insurance from the realm of priests and religion, placing it in the domain of economics. Religion is concerning itself increasingly with the insurance of life beyond the grave. Modern men, at least those who think, no longer pay wasteful premiums to control luck. Religion is slowly ascending to higher philosophic levels in contrast with its former function as a scheme of insurance against bad luck.

(956.6) 86:7.3 But these ancient ideas of religion prevented men from becoming fatalistic and hopelessly pessimistic; they believed they could at least do something to influence fate. The religion of ghost fear impressed upon men that they must regulate their conduct, that there was a supermaterial world which was in control of human destiny.

Rodan had much to say about the art of living:

160:1.2 (1772.3) Human life consists in three great drives—urges, desires, and lures. Strong character, commanding personality, is only acquired by converting the natural urge of life into the social art of living, by transforming present desires into those higher longings which are capable of lasting attainment, while the commonplace lure of existence must be transferred from one’s conventional and established ideas to the higher realms of unexplored ideas and undiscovered ideals.

160:1.3 (1772.4) The more complex civilization becomes, the more difficult will become the art of living. The more rapid the changes in social usage, the more complicated will become the task of character development. Every ten generations mankind must learn anew the art of living if progress is to continue. And if man becomes so ingenious that he more rapidly adds to the complexities of society, the art of living will need to be remastered in less time, perhaps every single generation. If the evolution of the art of living fails to keep pace with the technique of existence, humanity will quickly revert to the simple urge of living—the attainment of the satisfaction of present desires. Thus will humanity remain immature; society will fail in growing up to full maturity.

3. Knowledge, Wisdom, and Insight

102:3.1 (1121.3) Intellectual deficiency or educational poverty unavoidably handicaps higher religious attainment because such an impoverished environment of the spiritual nature robs religion of its chief channel of philosophic contact with the world of scientific knowledge. The intellectual factors of religion are important, but their overdevelopment is likewise sometimes very handicapping and embarrassing. Religion must continually labor under a paradoxical necessity: the necessity of making effective use of thought while at the same time discounting the spiritual serviceableness of all thinking.

102:3.2 (1121.4) Religious speculation is inevitable but always detrimental; speculation invariably falsifies its object. Speculation tends to translate religion into something material or humanistic, and thus, while directly interfering with the clarity of logical thought, it indirectly causes religion to appear as a function of the temporal world, the very world with which it should everlastingly stand in contrast. Therefore will religion always be characterized by paradoxes, the paradoxes resulting from the absence of the experiential connection between the material and the spiritual levels of the universe—morontia mota, the superphilosophic sensitivity for truth discernment and unity perception.

102:3.3 (1121.5) Material feelings, human emotions, lead directly to material actions, selfish acts. Religious insights, spiritual motivations, lead directly to religious actions, unselfish acts of social service and altruistic benevolence.

102:3.4 (1121.6) Religious desire is the hunger quest for divine reality. Religious experience is the realization of the consciousness of having found God. And when a human being does find God, there is experienced within the soul of that being such an indescribable restlessness of triumph in discovery that he is impelled to seek loving service-contact with his less illuminated fellows, not to disclose that he has found God, but rather to allow the overflow of the welling-up of eternal goodness within his own soul to refresh and ennoble his fellows. Real religion leads to increased social service.

102:3.5 (1122.1) Science, knowledge, leads to fact consciousness; religion, experience, leads to value consciousness; philosophy, wisdom, leads to co-ordinate consciousness; revelation (the substitute for morontia mota) leads to the consciousness of true reality; while the co-ordination of the consciousness of fact, value, and true reality constitutes awareness of personality reality, maximum of being, together with the belief in the possibility of the survival of that very personality. *

Me here:  Have you also noticed the utilization of paradox and conundrum to challenge our reason and logic when approaching religious truths and realities?  Jesus often made use of this teaching method too (as do the Zen masters).  We may not simply reason our way to religious experience, faith, faith assurance, trust, truth, beauty, or goodness.

We cannot rationally explain spiritual reality nor prove God’s existence and our personal source or destiny.  And yet facts, observation, rationality, and the application of intellect are integral to the experience of all such truth.

For it is the coordination, integration, and harmonization of our total experience on every level of our being that truly delivers the religious experience and religious faith.  Too much intellect or too little both offer certain obstacles to the potential experience.  Our sense of self and our material brain combine as partners and participants as our personalized experience with the Spirit within and as the giver of our personality, free will, mind, spirit, and the guiding voice and light to our source, origin, and destiny.

There is a full orchestra of instrumentation within but our conductor (me) begins as an inexperienced, immature, blind, deaf, and dumb director of the music.  Each player and instrument and part requires coordination, integration, harmonization….the direction of the conductor!

The more material minded is the conductor, the more that the exquisite performance within sounds more like a cacophony of chaos and noise, despite the beautiful and amazing refrains performed by any one instrument…or by them all.  It is only as we have the religious experience and transfer the seat of our own identity and grow in experiential wisdom and bear the fruits of the spirit…it is only then we become less blind and less deaf and more in tune and able to hear the instruments of the Spirit in ways which CAN be harmonized and coordinated and integrated into a personalized and powerful symphony of  our own religious growth and experience.

The miracle of the ‘human condition’ lies within this coordinate duality of our inherent nature and condition.  (Please forgive another of my crude analogies….the players in the orchestra are quite skilled and coordinated themselves of course…it truly is the conductor of personal free will and self determination who has the ‘tin ear’ and prevents the exquisite symphony of reality from the desired and available orchestration of our personal religious experience.)

This miracle is a blessing….but many feel cursed by the duality until it is coordinated and becomes harmonized and truly expresses our experiences the faith assurance and truth assurance of the spirit ministers within….as trust and hope grows in mind and as soul grows by the embrace of faith in God and our eternal nature and as the fruits come to the branch so attached to the vine, THEN are we gladdened by the living bread and waters of our Divine nature, all of which makes the ‘human condition’ a glorious experience of discovery and adventure and child-like trust in a wondrous and friendly universe!   The “hunger quest for Divine reality” leads us to the “indescribable restlessness of triumph in discovery” of that Divine reality!!

One thing I am learning in these studies of our personal religious experience is how we begin so attached and attuned as children to the Spirit within and how we so often ‘rationalize’ our way into material distractions and priorities which then require re-focalization and more intentional and volitional effort to hear and listen and respond, again, to the inner voice and light.  It is the intentional embrace of our spiritual natures that delivers ever greater faith and truth assurance and the integration and coordination of our dual natures into a meaningful experience of spiritization.

Much can and does happen I think regarding our spiritualization and growth of soul by an innate intuitive and unconscious response that even children and primitives can experience, prior to and without our cognitive awareness.  But only by cognitive and conscious intentionalism of our free will can the conductor truly engage the orchestra by actually hearing the symphonic harmonies and melodies so exquisitely performed by those who create us, care for us, comfort us, and guide us into the eternal adventure of perfecting!  The music is playing….do we hear it?

The reality of our humanity is a complex system of many different elements and relationships of those elements in an inter-association and inter-action that is the same system for each of us and yet a totally unique experience by each of us which is also a personalized expression of that unique experience.  Our choices and our motives and priorities which lead to our choices deliver the journey of this experience of the personalization of our humanity I think.  That personalization is based on perspective or our lens of view of reality – the one we create compared to the one that IS.

This perspective and its personalization is always in ‘adjustment’ and ‘refocus’ and maturation and includes additional content and context and growing awareness of an increasing context of more and more data but also more and more truth realization due to the functions of faith, revelation, insight, and wisdom.  It’s far more organic and evolutionary than mechanistic in its functionality.

Science, philosophy, and religion must be integrated and balanced and harmonized for the best outcomes of the experiential beings of time and space.  Fact and truth must be woven together by the perspective of our being and our becoming to form the foundation and the superstructure of our experience for our personalized expression of that experience.

This construction project of self and our experience and our expression of our experience (spiritization, religious experience, and personal growth) does not have a completion date or design.  We are engaged in a perpetual creation of our unique self and personalized self expression…and both its creation and its expression are formed by decisions….and more decisions….and then still more decisions….the perpetual perfecting of being and the expression of being by the choices we make in loving service to others….the embrace of reality…..by the ever wiser perspective of reality….by the personal experience of reality….embraced first by faith, and then by truth, and then by knowledge and understanding of experience and maturity, and then by finding the better and better and better choice among all the choices….forevermore.

102:3.6 (1122.2) Knowledge leads to placing men, to originating social strata and castes. Religion leads to serving men, thus creating ethics and altruism. Wisdom leads to the higher and better fellowship of both ideas and one’s fellows. Revelation liberates men and starts them out on the eternal adventure.

102:3.7 (1122.3) Science sorts men; religion loves men, even as yourself; wisdom does justice to differing men; but revelation glorifies man and discloses his capacity for partnership with God.

102:3.8 (1122.4) Science vainly strives to create the brotherhood of culture; religion brings into being the brotherhood of the spirit. Philosophy strives for the brotherhood of wisdom; revelation portrays the eternal brotherhood, the Paradise Corps of the Finality.

102:3.9 (1122.5) Knowledge yields pride in the fact of personality; wisdom is the consciousness of the meaning of personality; religion is the experience of cognizance of the value of personality; revelation is the assurance of personality survival.

102:3.10 (1122.6) Science seeks to identify, analyze, and classify the segmented parts of the limitless cosmos. Religion grasps the idea-of-the-whole, the entire cosmos. Philosophy attempts the identification of the material segments of science with the spiritual-insight concept of the whole. Wherein philosophy fails in this attempt, revelation succeeds, affirming that the cosmic circle is universal, eternal, absolute, and infinite. This cosmos of the Infinite I AM is therefore endless, limitless, and all-inclusive—timeless, spaceless, and unqualified. And we bear testimony that the Infinite I AM is also the Father of Michael of Nebadon and the God of human salvation.

Without Spirit, we are but animals…not yet human at all I do not think. The more connected to the Spirit, actually the more ‘human’ we become.

Still wondering what it really means for the Midwayers, Guardian Angels, and Materials to be “humanized”. I think we are born as little animals becoming humanized ourselves? To become spiritized and co-create soul and grow in the spirit or to attach our branch to the vine and grow the fruits of the spirit – this is to be humanized?!

I know celestials also mature and grow wisdom by experience but what of the branch’s attachment to the vine? Aren’t celestials created thusly “pre-attached”? Don’t they know/have the fruit but not grow the fruit? Is the religious experience unique to humanity? I think the “conspiracy” of the ministering spirits to spiritualize mortals is in many ways unique to mortals…it is the method of humanization!

Our partnership with God and our quest for God and the growth experience of perfecting will be never ending – once it begins. And while God works within children and primitives to deliver faith and begin the religious life, it falls upon us to then also personally choose this and become active partners by our own intentional volition….we must choose and purposefully want this co-creative partnership and actively cooperate with the Spirit to truly unleash true humanity and begin to realize our potential.

106:7.5 (1169.4) No matter how much you may grow in Father comprehension, your mind will always be staggered by the unrevealed infinity of the Father-I AM, the unexplored vastness of which will always remain unfathomable and incomprehensible throughout all the cycles of eternity. No matter how much of God you may attain, there will always remain much more of him, the existence of which you will not even suspect. And we believe that this is just as true on transcendental levels as it is in the domains of finite existence. The quest for God is endless!

107:4.7 (1181.3) Can you really realize the true significance of the Adjuster’s indwelling? Do you really fathom what it means to have an absolute fragment of the absolute and infinite Deity, the Universal Father, indwelling and fusing with your finite mortal natures? When mortal man fuses with an actual fragment of the existential Cause of the total cosmos, no limit can ever be placed upon the destiny of such an unprecedented and unimaginable partnership. In eternity, man will be discovering not only the infinity of the objective Deity but also the unending potentiality of the subjective fragment of this same God. Always will the Adjuster be revealing to the mortal personality the wonder of God, and never can this supernal revelation come to an end, for the Adjuster is of God and as God to mortal man.

107:6.3 (1182.5) Your path to Paradise is the path of spirit attainment, and the Adjuster nature will faithfully unfold the revelation of the spiritual nature of the Universal Father. Beyond the Paradise ascent and in the postfinaliter stages of the eternal career, the Adjuster may possibly contact with the onetime human partner in other than spirit ministry; but the Paradise ascent and the finaliter career are the partnership between the God-knowing spiritualizing mortal and the spiritual ministry of the God-revealing Adjuster.

118:5.2 (1299.2) In the beginning the Father does all, but as the panorama of eternity unfolds in response to the will and mandates of the Infinite, it becomes increasingly apparent that creatures, even men, are to become God’s partners in the realization of finality of destiny. And this is true even in the life in the flesh; when man and God enter into partnership, no limitation can be placed upon the future possibilities of such a partnership. When man realizes that the Universal Father is his partner in eternal progression, when he fuses with the indwelling Father presence, he has, in spirit, broken the fetters of time and has already entered upon the progressions of eternity in the quest for the Universal Father.

118:5.3 (1299.3) Mortal consciousness proceeds from the fact, to the meaning, and then to the value. Creator consciousness proceeds from the thought-value, through the word-meaning, to the fact of action. Always must God act to break the deadlock of the unqualified unity inherent in existential infinity. Always must Deity provide the pattern universe, the perfect personalities, the original truth, beauty, and goodness for which all subdeity creations strive. Always must God first find man that man may later find God. Always must there be a Universal Father before there can ever be universal sonship and consequent universal brotherhood.

One thing I am discovering in this study of the middle papers is how narrow and inflexible and traditional is the definition of “faith” and “religious” experience and expression that myself and so many others (including UB students) impose upon ourselves and others (especially others).  Too many of us fail to recognize the faith experience and the building of soul in others due to our own opinions and perspectives which limit that experience far too much by our own prejudice and preconceptions which too often leads to being judgmental and disappointed and impatient with others’ religiosity.  We can become so focused on the immaturities and materialness of our neighbors that we fail to discern the inner life and light that truly exists.

And so some of us come to think the world is going to heck in a hand basket and in need of intervention and emergency attention and that a majority of our fellows are in danger of hell or lack of survival…and seemingly everyone is needful of our opinions and corrections and advice of what to do and not to do, etc., etc., etc.  We’re a funny bunch of opinionated monkeys!!!  While we may find humility when considering God’s greatness….we often seem to fail to be more humble with one another.  And how can we truly love others until we forgive them of what we perceive and judge to be their faults and failures?

The brotherhood begins with understanding one another and expanding our own perspective of the fact and reality of the Spirit’s work within us all.  That experience and its expression simply is not what so many of us think and expect it to be.  That’s why we are taught to look for the fruits of the Spirit….not the piety and pretense so often offered as ‘evidence’ of someone’s claimed religious experience and their expectations of others.  Where is the love and forgiveness in such an attitude?  Jesus loved us….the tadpoleness of humanity delighted him and the animal/materialness brought forth great compassion and patience in him.

More differentiation of science/knowledge – philosophy/wisdom – religion/faith+revelation.  Consider the “will-to-believe” and the “will that believes”…and the journey between these points.  Consider the “hunger for truth” that compels us and the confirmation of truth which feeds us.  Consider how revelation delivers reality-insight which the TA then attaches “the feeling of reality”.

From early in our human life, we are constantly combining material realities learned by our 5 senses with spirit realities learned by the function of mind and the spirit ministries to mind.  The brain and the mind learning to dance together and harmonize these distinct realities by the intervening and integrating and coordinating function of philosophy.  This is spiritization of mind.  And the spiritualization of our very being.  The transformation of the evolutionary (the ministry and victory of the Adjutants and the Life Carriers) into its eternal and perfecting potential (the ministry and victory of the Spirits of Father, Mother, and Son within).

The journey and adventure of the Paradise Path….begins with the birth of soul and is propelled toward eternity by the willful and intentional transfer of the seat of our personal identity from the material and evolutionary world of our mortal birth to that of our eternal source and destiny and becomes guaranteed by our eternal union with the God Fragment within.  And in the light of eternity, this does not take so long a time as we might think from our current temporal perspective!

102:3.11 (1122.7) Science indicates Deity as a fact; philosophy presents the idea of an Absolute; religion envisions God as a loving spiritual personality. Revelation affirms the unity of the fact of Deity, the idea of the Absolute, and the spiritual personality of God and, further, presents this concept as our Father—the universal fact of existence, the eternal idea of mind, and the infinite spirit of life. *

102:3.12 (1122.8) The pursuit of knowledge constitutes science; the search for wisdom is philosophy; the love for God is religion; the hunger for truth is a revelation. But it is the indwelling Thought Adjuster that attaches the feeling of reality to man’s spiritual insight into the cosmos.

102:3.13 (1122.9) In science, the idea precedes the expression of its realization; in religion, the experience of realization precedes the expression of the idea. There is a vast difference between the evolutionary will-to-believe and the product of enlightened reason, religious insight, and revelation—the will that believes.

102:3.14 (1122.10) In evolution, religion often leads to man’s creating his concepts of God; revelation exhibits the phenomenon of God’s evolving man himself, while in the earth life of Christ Michael we behold the phenomenon of God’s revealing himself to man. Evolution tends to make God manlike; revelation tends to make man Godlike.

102:3.15 (1122.11) Science is only satisfied with first causes, religion with supreme personality, and philosophy with unity. Revelation affirms that these three are one, and that all are good. The eternal real is the good of the universe and not the time illusions of space evil. In the spiritual experience of all personalities, always is it true that the real is the good and the good is the real.

4. The Fact of Experience

102:4.1 (1123.1) Because of the presence in your minds of the Thought Adjuster, it is no more of a mystery for you to know the mind of God than for you to be sure of the consciousness of knowing any other mind, human or superhuman. Religion and social consciousness have this in common: They are predicated on the consciousness of other-mindness. The technique whereby you can accept another’s idea as yours is the same whereby you may “let the mind which was in Christ be also in you.”

102:4.2 (1123.2) What is human experience? It is simply any interplay between an active and questioning self and any other active and external reality. The mass of experience is determined by depth of concept plus totality of recognition of the reality of the external. The motion of experience equals the force of expectant imagination plus the keenness of the sensory discovery of the external qualities of contacted reality. The fact of experience is found in self-consciousness plus other-existences—other-thingness, other-mindness, and other-spiritness.

102:4.3 (1123.3) Man very early becomes conscious that he is not alone in the world or the universe. There develops a natural spontaneous self-consciousness of other-mindness in the environment of selfhood. Faith translates this natural experience into religion, the recognition of God as the reality—source, nature, and destiny—of other-mindness. But such a knowledge of God is ever and always a reality of personal experience. If God were not a personality, he could not become a living part of the real religious experience of a human personality.

102:4.4 (1123.4) The element of error present in human religious experience is directly proportional to the content of materialism which contaminates the spiritual concept of the Universal Father. Man’s prespirit progression in the universe consists in the experience of divesting himself of these erroneous ideas of the nature of God and of the reality of pure and true spirit. Deity is more than spirit, but the spiritual approach is the only one possible to ascending man.

102:4.5 (1123.5) Prayer is indeed a part of religious experience, but it has been wrongly emphasized by modern religions, much to the neglect of the more essential communion of worship. The reflective powers of the mind are deepened and broadened by worship. Prayer may enrich the life, but worship illuminates destiny.

102:4.6 (1123.6) Revealed religion is the unifying element of human existence. Revelation unifies history, co-ordinates geology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, sociology, and psychology. Spiritual experience is the real soul of man’s cosmos.

8) The fact of our life experience does not define the value of that experience…or the wisdom derived therefrom.  Indeed, experience which is devoid of relationship with God and the religious life of that experience remains devoid of meaningful wisdom and spiritual insight – it has no lasting value to us or to the Supreme.

Remember that the Adjutants deliver us evolutionary religion based on faith….the hunger for truth and growth within is a function of revelation by the Adjuster.  Revelation unites and unifies our reality – our experience in the material world with our experience in the inner life…and that inner life begins with other mindedness – the assurance of God and our survival.

When we are confused or anxious or doubtful, we can go to the “other mindedness” for solace and solution.  And sufficient experience in this will result in a more direct communion and worship…a personal embrace of God within….and this embrace further reveals ultimate reality and destiny to our own mind and soul.  It is the flow of life from vine to branch which results in fruit.

8)

Jesus taught us to strive for the ability to feel the presence of God and our connection to Deity and the Divine Affection within.

155:6.12 It is not so important that you should know about the fact of God as that you should increasingly grow in the ability to feel the presence of God.

I am learning a new appreciation and perspective…even a total paradigm shift….related to the religious experience.  I’d always thought one had to become religious.  And that the teaching of transferring the seat of our identity meant that the religious realities and truths in life had to be chosen consciously to BE religious or HAVE a religious experience.  This is simply not true.

One must consciously embrace the Spirit within to reach certain levels of progress and spiritualization….to be born again I think is to add conscious volition and cognitive intent to that which is truly a natural attachment to God and an inner awareness of and response to God.

The mortal mind is designed and constructed and encircuited specifically FOR the religious life and experience within.  It is definitely one of our dual nature.  We learn to allow the material nature to become dominant…or it never would I do not think.

On worlds settled in Light and Life and ruled by love and universe realities, I think we would not have such a need for transferring our identities….just learn to balance and harmonize both inherent natures!  But on such a world and at such a time as this, materialism and primitivism and self importance are taught and learned early and quickly far too often.  It is THIS that requires such an effort of will to embrace the spiritual nature I think as we age and mature.

Nevertheless, the religious life and spiritization of mind is an ever present and powerful influence and modifier of mortal existence and reality….from children and primitives to nearly all of humanity, we are affected by the religious life.

We may not even recognize it as being a religious life and it may be very distorted by a lack of knowledge or false beliefs or materialism or all manner of error.  But still does God pursue us and whisper and tickle and give us the yearn, thirst, and hunger and provide that which. and only that which, nourishes that hunger and desire….and this goes on not just within me or us, but in everybody!

Once soul is born….and the flicker is lit….then is potential ignited….and potential always has value….and thus are time, patience, love, mercy, and hope always extended to potential for its realization and gift of ever more potential!!

Thanks to all who add their own light to help us illuminate such a wonderful topic and teaching!!

5. The Supremacy of Purposive Potential

102:5.1 (1123.7) Although the establishment of the fact of belief is not equivalent to establishing the fact of that which is believed, nevertheless, the evolutionary progression of simple life to the status of personality does demonstrate the fact of the existence of the potential of personality to start with. And in the time universes, potential is always supreme over the actual. In the evolving cosmos the potential is what is to be, and what is to be is the unfolding of the purposive mandates of Deity.

102:5.2 (1124.1) This same purposive supremacy is shown in the evolution of mind ideation when primitive animal fear is transmuted into the constantly deepening reverence for God and into increasing awe of the universe. Primitive man had more religious fear than faith, and the supremacy of spirit potentials over mind actuals is demonstrated when this craven fear is translated into living faith in spiritual realities.

102:5.3 (1124.2) You can psychologize evolutionary religion but not the personal-experience religion of spiritual origin. Human morality may recognize values, but only religion can conserve, exalt, and spiritualize such values. But notwithstanding such actions, religion is something more than emotionalized morality. Religion is to morality as love is to duty, as sonship is to servitude, as essence is to substance. Morality discloses an almighty Controller, a Deity to be served; religion discloses an all-loving Father, a God to be worshiped and loved. And again this is because the spiritual potentiality of religion is dominant over the duty actuality of the morality of evolution.

8)

112:2.14 The possibility of the unification of the evolving self is inherent in the qualities of its constitutive factors: the basic energies, the master tissues, the fundamental chemical overcontrol, the supreme ideas, the supreme motives, the supreme goals, and the divine spirit of Paradise bestowal — the secret of the self-consciousness of man’s spiritual nature.

112:2.15 The purpose of cosmic evolution is to achieve unity of personality through increasing spirit dominance, volitional response to the teaching and leading of the Thought Adjuster. Personality, both human and superhuman, is characterized by an inherent cosmic quality which may be called “the evolution of dominance,” the expansion of the control of both itself and its environment.

8)

For those in whom the material nature is or becomes dominant, that was a learned materialism.  My intention is simply to recognize how inherent and intrinsic is our spiritual nature.  We arrive with our dual nature and we learn to and by our choices make one nature more dominant than the other.  I am understanding the text to teach us our natural and normal and functional is our spirit nature from the very beginning of our life.

We must learn to “transfer” the seat of our identity on this world at this time because we have made those choices and been given that example and upbringing which makes the material/animal nature the dominant nature.  But if we were raised on a world settled in Light and Life, I wonder if we would not culturally be raised in an environment whereby and from our birth, we were raised to harmonize and balance both natures and recognize our true identity is the spirit nature?  Religious consciousness emerges and does so positively in a child toward moral righteousness and social ministry…”…in the absence of wrong teaching…”.

8)

Sometime before finding the UB, I studied Native American philosophy and the religion of the Mother Spirit.  One of my favorite lessons was the old Cherokee parable about the 2 wolves:

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.

“One is Evil – It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

“The other is Good – It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather:

“Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied:

“The one you feed."

I am curious as to the soul’s ability for its own volitional growth and relationship with the TA and how this relates to the conscious mind and choices made and volitional decisions of the conscious mind.  How are the superconscious and soul related?  As the birth of soul is an unconscious function of our conscious mind making a moral choice, what about rebirth or being born again?

I’ve always considered that to also be of the conscious and self-aware mind….but there seems to be so much going on in the soul AND the adjutant led evolved religious experience.  I’m wondering just how much of our religious experience and faith experience and revelatory experience are conscious and how much is unconscious.

We are hard wired for religious faith and experience and soul birth and revelatory truth reception and truth assurance…we do not create or connect any of this “hardware” of “software”….the operating system and the hard drive come with our mind and personality endowment but free will and choice and decisions (or perhaps spirit response) are required to actuate or actualize true religious experience?

6. The Certainty of Religious Faith

102:6.1 (1124.3) The philosophic elimination of religious fear and the steady progress of science add greatly to the mortality of false gods; and even though these casualties of man-made deities may momentarily befog the spiritual vision, they eventually destroy that ignorance and superstition which so long obscured the living God of eternal love. The relation between the creature and the Creator is a living experience, a dynamic religious faith, which is not subject to precise definition. To isolate part of life and call it religion is to disintegrate life and to distort religion. And this is just why the God of worship claims all allegiance or none.

102:6.2 (1124.4) The gods of primitive men may have been no more than shadows of themselves; the living God is the divine light whose interruptions constitute the creation shadows of all space.

102:6.3 (1124.5) The religionist of philosophic attainment has faith in a personal God of personal salvation, something more than a reality, a value, a level of achievement, an exalted process, a transmutation, the ultimate of time-space, an idealization, the personalization of energy, the entity of gravity, a human projection, the idealization of self, nature’s upthrust, the inclination to goodness, the forward impulse of evolution, or a sublime hypothesis. The religionist has faith in a God of love. Love is the essence of religion and the wellspring of superior civilization.

102:6.4 (1124.6) Faith transforms the philosophic God of probability into the saving God of certainty in the personal religious experience. Skepticism may challenge the theories of theology, but confidence in the dependability of personal experience affirms the truth of that belief which has grown into faith.

102:6.5 (1124.7) Convictions about God may be arrived at through wise reasoning, but the individual becomes God-knowing only by faith, through personal experience. In much that pertains to life, probability must be reckoned with, but when contacting with cosmic reality, certainty may be experienced when such meanings and values are approached by living faith. The God-knowing soul dares to say, “I know,” even when this knowledge of God is questioned by the unbeliever who denies such certitude because it is not wholly supported by intellectual logic. To every such doubter the believer only replies, “How do you know that I do not know?”

Each person with a soul is having a religious experience.  It seems to me those personal religious experiences are or can be so very different from each other in context and perception – the uniqueness of the experience, if so similar to one another in component and function – the universality of the religious experience.

I would think that over the mortal epochs of time and based upon the functionality and influence of our planetary rulers, leaders, and guides, that the context and perception becomes more universal. But that in the earlier epochs and upon a confused world without corporeal leadership and example, where ignorance of reality and those superstitions and beliefs based on lack of information and example fill the minds of more primitive mortals, that the term “conscious” choice is not so clearly defined or understood.

Conscious but misinformed, misdirected, fear driven, confused, doubtful, and not only ignorant of reality, but the willful embracing of a self or social invented reality-construct.  Even such a misinformed mind still is making conscious choices of will which grow soul,  and transfer the seat of identity, and makes circle progress.

This seems to me make it impossible for one person to measure or assess the religious experience of any other person based on their own evaluation and determination of what constitutes a “conscious” choice or decision.  But there are those, including UB students, which hold a creedal and doctrinal standard of beliefs and acts which require specific consciousness of choice and commitment – an awareness of great specificity – the embrace and declaration of which presumes an awareness and conscious choice and transformation in others which may or may not occur and may not be conscious at all.

One point I am attempting to articulate is that an ignorant mind without knowledge or proper contextual reference points, and with a mostly false and invented reality construct, can still have a “conscious” religious experience and make conscious and volitional choices which grow soul and transfer the seat of identity.  I think I have been incorrectly presuming such a religious life is “unconscious” while it really is conscious…..but conscious by another is not so easily described, defined, or understood by another mortal mind, for what one mind knows or believes is not the same as another’s.

We recently read the quote that says we should not judge the religion of a primitive or a primitive religion by our own knowledge, beliefs, or perspective…..and I am guessing this is why…..even the person in the same time frame and family and tribe and culture is having a very unique religious experience based on a very unique perspective and reality construct.

I am thinking then that being born again and the growth of soul is not something with any universal definition related to mortal consciousness and beliefs but one of functional outcomes really known to and measurable only by the Spirit within.  And this why we are taught that only the fruits of the Spirit are any form of true measurement or awareness by other mortals.

One’s faith experience cannot be compared to another’s to evaluate who is transferring their identity and who has been born again with any great accuracy or certainty. Spiritualization and growth can occur slowly or in spurts or cycles of accelerated growth or even instant flux of transformation along the entire spectrum curve of the experiential and conscious transfer of the seat of identity in our personal religious experience.

102:6.6 (1125.1) Though reason can always question faith, faith can always supplement both reason and logic. Reason creates the probability which faith can transform into a moral certainty, even a spiritual experience. God is the first truth and the last fact; therefore does all truth take origin in him, while all facts exist relative to him. God is absolute truth. As truth one may know God, but to understand—to explain—God, one must explore the fact of the universe of universes. The vast gulf between the experience of the truth of God and ignorance as to the fact of God can be bridged only by living faith. Reason alone cannot achieve harmony between infinite truth and universal fact.

102:6.7 (1125.2) Belief may not be able to resist doubt and withstand fear, but faith is always triumphant over doubting, for faith is both positive and living. The positive always has the advantage over the negative, truth over error, experience over theory, spiritual realities over the isolated facts of time and space. The convincing evidence of this spiritual certainty consists in the social fruits of the spirit which such believers, faithers, yield as a result of this genuine spiritual experience. Said Jesus: “If you love your fellows as I have loved you, then shall all men know that you are my disciples.”

102:6.8 (1125.3) To science God is a possibility, to psychology a desirability, to philosophy a probability, to religion a certainty, an actuality of religious experience. Reason demands that a philosophy which cannot find the God of probability should be very respectful of that religious faith which can and does find the God of certitude. Neither should science discount religious experience on grounds of credulity, not so long as it persists in the assumption that man’s intellectual and philosophic endowments emerged from increasingly lesser intelligences the further back they go, finally taking origin in primitive life which was utterly devoid of all thinking and feeling.

102:6.9 (1125.4) The facts of evolution must not be arrayed against the truth of the reality of the certainty of the spiritual experience of the religious living of the God-knowing mortal. Intelligent men should cease to reason like children and should attempt to use the consistent logic of adulthood, logic which tolerates the concept of truth alongside the observation of fact. Scientific materialism has gone bankrupt when it persists, in the face of each recurring universe phenomenon, in refunding its current objections by referring what is admittedly higher back into that which is admittedly lower. Consistency demands the recognition of the activities of a purposive Creator.

102:6.10 (1125.5) Organic evolution is a fact; purposive or progressive evolution is a truth which makes consistent the otherwise contradictory phenomena of the ever-ascending achievements of evolution. The higher any scientist progresses in his chosen science, the more will he abandon the theories of materialistic fact in favor of the cosmic truth of the dominance of the Supreme Mind. Materialism cheapens human life; the gospel of Jesus tremendously enhances and supernally exalts every mortal. Mortal existence must be visualized as consisting in the intriguing and fascinating experience of the realization of the reality of the meeting of the human upreach and the divine and saving downreach.

8) So....mortals are the intersecting point of Divinity and material realities of creation. Tadpoles are the lowest life form in time and space with mind AND personality, with material origin AND eternal potential, and directly connected to Deity within and the lowest form of being in all creation with an awareness of this selfhood AND awareness of other mindedness, and the beings with the greatest potential for experiential wisdom in the eternities of time. Wow.

The Foundations of Religious Faith begin at the endowment of personality and mind and volition, at or near physical birth, and prior to any conscious awareness or intentions of will based on experiential results or wisdom. Religious experience begins with the very human proclivities of generosity and kindness ...sharing and caring ...affection.

Indeed, the first personal and intentional moral choice of others over self gives birth to soul and the Divine partnership adventure with God and eternal potential truly begins. Or so I understand the teachings.

The quotes below would seem,  to me, to state that the Holy Spirit’s ministry to mind does not await and is not dependent upon the birth of soul.  In the earlier papers on the history of mortal religious experience, we are told:

The Later Evolution of Religion

92:0.1 (1003.1) MAN possessed a religion of natural origin as a part of his evolutionary experience long before any systematic revelations were made on Urantia. But this religion of natural origin was, in itself, the product of man’s superanimal endowments. Evolutionary religion arose slowly throughout the millenniums of mankind’s experiential career through the ministry of the following influences operating within, and impinging upon, savage, barbarian, and civilized man:

92:0.2 (1003.2) 1. The adjutant of worship—the appearance in animal consciousness of superanimal potentials for reality perception. This might be termed the primordial human instinct for Deity.

92:0.3 (1003.3) 2. The adjutant of wisdom—the manifestation in a worshipful mind of the tendency to direct its adoration in higher channels of expression and toward ever-expanding concepts of Deity reality.

92:0.4 (1003.4) 3. The Holy Spirit—this is the initial supermind bestowal, and it unfailingly appears in all bona fide human personalities. This ministry to a worship-craving and wisdom-desiring mind creates the capacity to self-realize the postulate of human survival, both in theologic concept and as an actual and factual personality experience.

92:0.5 (1003.5) The co-ordinate functioning of these three divine ministrations is quite sufficient to initiate and prosecute the growth of evolutionary religion. These influences are later augmented by Thought Adjusters, seraphim, and the Spirit of Truth, all of which accelerate the rate of religious development. These agencies have long functioned on Urantia, and they will continue here as long as this planet remains an inhabited sphere. Much of the potential of these divine agencies has never yet had opportunity for expression; much will be revealed in the ages to come as mortal religion ascends, level by level, toward the supernal heights of morontia value and spirit truth.

The Reality of Religious Experience

103:0.1 (1129.1) ALL of man’s truly religious reactions are sponsored by the early ministry of the adjutant of worship and are censored by the adjutant of wisdom. Man’s first supermind endowment is that of personality encircuitment in the Holy Spirit of the Universe Creative Spirit; and long before either the bestowals of the divine Sons or the universal bestowal of the Adjusters, this influence functions to enlarge man’s viewpoint of ethics, religion, and spirituality. Subsequent to the bestowals of the Paradise Sons the liberated Spirit of Truth makes mighty contributions to the enlargement of the human capacity to perceive religious truths. As evolution advances on an inhabited world, the Thought Adjusters increasingly participate in the development of the higher types of human religious insight. The Thought Adjuster is the cosmic window through which the finite creature may faith-glimpse the certainties and divinities of limitless Deity, the Universal Father.

103:0.2 (1129.2) The religious tendencies of the human races are innate; they are universally manifested and have an apparently natural origin; primitive religions are always evolutionary in their genesis. As natural religious experience continues to progress, periodic revelations of truth punctuate the otherwise slow-moving course of planetary evolution.

108:2.2 (1187.1) The Adjusters cannot invade the mortal mind until it has been duly prepared by the indwelling ministry of the adjutant mind-spirits and encircuited in the Holy Spirit. And it requires the co-ordinate function of all seven adjutants to thus qualify the human mind for the reception of an Adjuster. Creature mind must exhibit the worship outreach and indicate wisdom function by exhibiting the ability to choose between the emerging values of good and evil—moral choice.

108:2.3 (1187.2) Thus is the stage of the human mind set for the reception of Adjusters, but as a general rule they do not immediately appear to indwell such minds except on those worlds where the Spirit of Truth is functioning as a spiritual co-ordinator of these different spirit ministries. If this spirit of the bestowal Sons is present, the Adjusters unfailingly come the instant the seventh adjutant mind-spirit begins to function and signalizes to the Universe Mother Spirit that it has achieved in potential the co-ordination of the associated six adjutants of prior ministry to such a mortal intellect. Therefore have the divine Adjusters been universally bestowed upon all normal minds of moral status on Urantia ever since the day of Pentecost.

8) The above quotes support my prior statements about the universality of the religious experience, regardless of the level of awareness or consciousness and willful and intentional volition the mortal mind might have or apply to the experience.  All normal and average minded people on Urantia are having a “religious experience”….regardless of their understanding or ability or willingness to articulate that experience.

One of my growing senses or thoughts coming forth by this study is that all people are engaged, to some degree or another, in religious experience and soul growth, and while some (or many) may be stifling and embracing delays and obstacles to that experience by self importance and materialism,  but that very few people are actually engaged in active resistance and the embrace of sin to live lives of iniquity and by so doing extinguishing the flame and flicker of faith and the hope for survival and the ideals that faith and truth assurance deliver to us early and often in this life.

Our world is filled with goodness and kindness and hope and faith….billions and billions of us pray and believe in God and heaven and live with hope for a better tomorrow for our children and world and work in ways small and large to bring love and light to others.  Unfortunately, some of us cannot see this reality and truth, and are entirely focused on the evil and repercussions of evil on our world and mostly because this is the exceptional and sensational focus of attention and not because it is the rule or way of life of Urantia for most people.

Even the suffering and those in desperate situations and times demonstrate hope, faith, generosity, courage, trust and all the good fruits of the religious life within.

Those of us who mistakenly believe and claim that others must believe,  profess, and behave as we do to prove their religious experience demonstrate their/our own blindness to how natural, normal, inherent, persistent, relentless, and integrated are the Spirit ministries which deliver the religious experience to all normal minds in ways we may not perceive or understand or might articulate but are very real and very effective nonetheless.

The light of God shines within many, even most, of us tadpoles whether we have the wisdom and love and insight to witness that fact and reality in ourselves or in others.

195:5.12 (2076.3) As you view the world, remember that the black patches of evil which you see are shown against a white background of ultimate good. You do not view merely white patches of good which show up miserably against a black background of evil.

195:5.13 (2076.4) When there is so much good truth to publish and proclaim, why should men dwell so much upon the evil in the world just because it appears to be a fact? The beauties of the spiritual values of truth are more pleasurable and uplifting than is the phenomenon of evil.
