The Master Boatbuilder
- A new painting inspired by The Urantia Book
Dear TruthBook Friends and Family,
We are thrilled to introduce the newest addition to the stellar gallery of paintings inspired by the life of Jesus in The Urantia Book; the collection of fine-art depictions of Jesus continues to grow!
This new painting, called The Master Boatbuilder by artist Russ Docken, memorializes an important time in Jesus' life - after he left his childhood home in Nazareth, but before he began his tour of the Roman world
Jesus was twenty-seven years old when he left his family home in Nazareth for the last time and moved to Capernaum. The Urantia Book tells us that Jesus was still “training as a man of the realm,” and this year in Jesus’ life was full of experience for Jesus in that regard.
Once in Capernaum, Jesus went to work for Zebedee, a friend of his late father, Joseph; Zebedee had long desired to have a boatbuilding enterprise of his own and, knowing of Jesus’ skills as an expert woodworker and designer, Zebedee invited Jesus to take part in this plan, and Jesus consented. Zebedee and his sons, James, John, and David, became Jesus' life-long friends, the sons playing important roles in Jesus’ later ministry to the world.
In this lively, colorful image, we see Jesus at the helm of the boat, clearly enjoying a lighthearted moment with the elder Zebedee, while the three Zebedee sons work in the foreground. It is easy to see that they are a contented team of workers. After this year ended, his life would take a new direction, but this painting shows us how Jesus may have spent many of his days during his time in Capernaum - happily building boats in the company of the Zebedee family, who adopted him as one of their own. Jesus looks healthy, carefree, confident, and enthusiastic – perfectly at home in his role as “skilled craftsman of Capernaum.’
Jesus was a hard worker, an innovative boat designer, and a spiritual teacher during this time in Capernaum; during this last settled year in Jesus' life we are also told that Jesus made great advances in his mind and achieved greater communication with his indwelling Thought Adjuster. And, it is interesting to note that it was during his time in Capernaum that the people who attended his weekly meetings of Zebedee’s employees called Jesus “Master” for the first time, a worthy name that has followed him into the 21st century!
