Zebedee brothers join Jesus

James, John and JesusPELLA, FEBRUARY, AD 26

James and John Zebedee, longtime associates of Jesus ben Joseph, have become the third and fourth apostles of the new “kingdom.” They join Andrew and Simon Peter, who were the first chosen followers of Jesus. When questioned about the fact that Jesus chose two virtual strangers as his first apostles, James and John explained that the Master had already chosen them “in spirit.” It was pointed out that the official honor was not given them, yet they responded philosophically. “In the eyes of men, perhaps we are the third and fourth apostles,” James replied “But, this is not the most important thing. Andrew and Simon were chosen while we were searching for the Master in a well-meant, but futile enterprise. He was not lost. Had we been here we would have been first in official designation as well as in spirit. But, we are content in the place we hold in the Master’s heart, and glad to welcome such able men as Andrew and Peter as our brothers.”

John Zebedee added: “Jesus taught us to be unconcerned with those things that cause human anxiety. We rather seek to do the will of the Father in heaven, knowing all other things shall be added.” Some expressed confusion at John’s statement, especially the reference to God as a “Father in heaven.” One Jewish official explained that the scriptural basis for such an appellation of God may be as referenced to the Father of Israel. “But,” he added, “lay people should be cautious in such commentary.”
