Jesus is taken to Golgotha for Execution

jesus on the way to GolgothaJERUSALEM, APRIL 7, AD 30

At eight o’clock this morning Jesus was put into the hands of two brigades of soldiers with orders to crucify him. The same captain who originally captured Jesus is in charge of the execution. Some delay occurred when this centurion elected to include two convicted and condemned associates of Barabbas in the pre-Passover executions. The two thieves were scourged but the captain spared Jesus any further punishment. Just before nine, in the courtyard of the praetorium, the soldiers placed a heavy crossbeam of wood on Jesus’ shoulders. The captain led the procession, carrying three small white signs with him. The name of the criminals and the nature of their offenses was written in charcoal on these signs. The signs of the two thieves have their names, and beneath them simply the word: “Brigand.” Written on Jesus’ sign is: “Jesus of Nazareth” and below: “The King of the Jews.” The sign is written in Latin, Greek and Aramaic.
